Alright well classes have officially begun for us. Its kind of strange though, because its just a language class - so we just have class from 9:30-12 monday through friday, and then the rest of the day is free, and so far not too much homework. It doesn't really feel like classes have actually begun. Right now we're just doing some review, so its a little slow, but I have to do a few presentations, so that should help pick up the pace a bit. We're basically making a little show and tell speech, so I think I'm going to do that on fencing, so I can make SOME use of all that equipment I brought (basically everything except knickers and a weapon)... We're all falling into a bit of a routine here. Part of that ... read more

After almost a year of planning, we finally landed in Narita Japan last Wednesday around 4:30 p.m. (2:30 a.m. in the U.S.). Most of our luggage was shipped to our house to arrive the next day, because from there we hopped on a train that took us on a 4 hour ride to Shinjuko that had one transfer in Tokyo before stopping in Kofu. From Kofu we had a 20 min. car ride to our house in Minami Alps. By the time we reached our house it was 10:30 p.m. and we were exhausted. Our guide here works for the Board of Education, her name is Kae, and she has been very helpful. We have had to do a lot of paper work the first couple of days in setting up health insurance, a bank account, ... read more

Alright, so now we're up to Sunday August 5th. After the craziness of the previous two days, it was finally time to get down to some studying. Today is Monday, and we had a placement test today, so I had to review all that fun grammar and kanji so that I don't get placed in special kids Japanese ( I probably will be anyway). AFTER the studying though, the tutors all came to take us to the Kojiyosai festival, which is a big festival that takes place at like Kawaguchi, right by Mt. Fuji. I'd like to nerd it up a bit here and mention that it's kind of silly to say things like Senso-ji temple, Kojiyosai festival, and Mt. Fujiyama (which people don't say often, but I've heard it before). A lot of the time, ... read more

Since I'm sure people didn't want to slog through a giant blog post, I split this one into two, maybe more. We'll see. Deal with it. Aaanyway, The day after my last post was Friday, I believe (days are ok to keep track of now. I think I have a pretty solid grasp), and the day after we had an orientation - just some tips about living in japan, some information on our classes, the schedule for the next few days, and a little campus tour. The campus is only about the size of two colleges on UCSD campus. Probably most akin to Warren and Sixth, since those are the boonies of UCSD. After the orientation, one of the program organizers had made lunch for us. I forget the name, but the dish is cold noodles ... read more

Alright, so Travelblog is back up and running FINALLY. I wrote one and saved it after the first day I was in Tsuru, so here it is.... Okay.... I THINK I’m four days into my stay here in Japan, but with the time change it has been impossible to keep track of what day it is. As I write this post at 11 pm Thursday night, it is 7 am Thursday morning back home, and around 7 am in the morning its about 5 pm the previous evening back home. So the first day after my last post, my dad and I went around Tokyo checking out various sights. The first place we went to was the Senso-ji temple, whose entrance is the Kuminarimon (thunder gate). It’s a 700 year old Buddhist temple, and there is ... read more

Dun dun dunnnn.... I'm so hardcore. I was out until 5am the night before last, then came back to the hostel for about 15 minutes, then went out to climb Mount Fuji with a few guys from the hostel. I slept for about an hour on the bus, then was good to go. It was kind of intimidating when I showed up there. People were decked out in leg wraps, massive backpacks, wooden sticks and ski poles, special jackets, oxygen tanks and the like. I had my shorts, my short-sleeved jacked-shit thing that I bought here, a smelly T-shirt from dancing all night at a club, my green Adidas retro safety shoes--and a slight hangover. So there we go, up the mountain. Me, a French dude, an English dude, an American, all looking very much unprepared. ... read more

Hakone and Fuji Five Lakes (Fujigoko) This is going to be a bit of a Mt Fuji marathon, so if you find it boring, please trust me that the beautiful breathtaking mountain is one of the reasons why I love living in Japan. Understand that it is much more spectacular in real life but I hope some of the photos capture its grandeur! It Could Have Been Worse Forgetting my money and camera was not a good start to our overnight road trip. Not to worry as worse things could have happened - I could have been killed by volcanic gasses, stranded on a road in an earthquake, witnessed the eruption of Mt Fuji or gobbled up by the gurgling of the hot spring bath! An early bus ride to Shizuoka city to pick up yet ... read more
