Started out today on very little sleep, as per usual, dad kept me up all night snoring. Thank God for green tea with breakfast... We ate at the Imperial Viking Sal buffet at the hotel. Which was fine, but a little overpriced. We had Rudy and Ted (dad's coworkers) with us, and together we set off for their only day of sightseeing in the city. We hopped on the metro at Ginza station, about a 10 minute walk from the hotel and took the Ginza line to Asakusa. Asakusa is an old neighborhood - narrow streets, colorful booths and old temples: We spent a good bit of time at Sensoji Temple, passing through the shopping area of Nakamise on the way. Sensoji is the oldest temple in Tokyo, supposedly built in 628. It's very colorful with ... read more

Well, jet lag had me up at 4 am. Pretty good for my first day here, but way too early to do anything. Had a lazy morning in the room catching up on emails / reading my lonely planet guide / watching BBC World. (It was that or more Japanese telenovelas. I can't follow them - it's just couples in kimonos screaming and crying.) After sunrise (around 7 am) I ventured outside. I decided to start small by exploring what was in walking distance of the hotel. And I got lucky - directly across the street was Hibiya Park. At 7 am it was pretty deserted, although it apparently has its fair share of homeless inhabitants. Many of the benches were covered with blue tarps and sometimes there was movement underneath the tarps. I can't imagine ... read more

Greetings from Ikebukuro, Tokyo. We've been here for one week, sleeping on tatami mats, and taking in the sights one by one, trying to not get sucked into the vortex of intensity that is Tokyo. We had a restorative stay at the infamous Park Hyatt - the view was amazing. 27 million people populate the central city, and we've been a bit lost in translation, for lack of a better phrase. Tokyo is all about food and fashion. On one hand it is steeped in a historicity deeper than anything we can comprehend, but one the other hand is a string of Time Square's, pachinko parlors (the popular gambling sensation), crazy convenience stores selling dress shirts and sushi to go, and arcades we went a little crazy ourselves on the bongo drum game. Everyone is so kind and gracious. Other than the Park Hyatt, we’ve stayed at the Kimi Ryokan, which is starting to feel a little like home here. It’s a ve... read more

Well, I'm finally here in Tokyo. Everything went pretty smoothly, although it was very exhausting. Got to LAX 2 hours before flight yet they were already boarding my group by the time I got to the gate. The flight itself was largely uneventful. Saw two movies - BRUCE ALMIGHTY (so boring) and DREAMER (sorry Lewis, I have to agree with your parents on this - heartwarming and enjoyable). Got some reading done. They fed us really well - chicken stir fry and veggie sushi for lunch, toblerone chocolate for a snack, and pizza and fruit for dinner. I'm stuffed. Best I've ever eaten in coach. Flying with a cold wasn't too terrible until the landing. Part of my head was really congested and the descent created this excruciating pins and needles in my left eye ... read more

Well, it's still 36 hours until I leave for Tokyo, but I thought I would open up my new travelogue for business in anticipation. Rather than traveling with journal I'm travelling high tech this trip. I'll keep a log here of all the places I see, people I meet, experiences and whatnot rather than write it all out long hand. Which will save me retyping it anyhow. Also check here for pictures. Yay digital camera and laptop.... read more

Konnichiwa everybody, So after a one and a half hour flight delay I finally took off for Tokyo. Of course I had to sit between two obese men during the flight. So that sucked, but one of them turned out to be a Native American who was his tribe's chief. He was going to meet with some native Taiwanese people. So that was interesting. After the flight I had a long trip on the Metro to my hostel. I sat next to a Japanese business man (although here they just call themselves "business men") who was really excited to practice his English with me, but I had a really difficult time understanding anything he said. We talked for a half hour about maybe baseball, but I'm not sure. I think I heard him mention Matsui at ... read more

Christmas time, but Turkeys cost about $150 CDN, and trees are very uncommon. No pumpkin pie or Christmas pudding either. The big Christmas dish is "Christmas Cake", which can be just about any type of cake, but commonly seems to be a white cake with strawberries on it. I went to a soccer game last Friday, it was Sydney FC vs. Al Ahly (Egypt). There's a "special guest" player on Sydney right now, a Japanese fellow named Kazuyoshi "Kazu" Miura, who is incredibly popular with the Japanese fans. There was always someone yelling "KAZU!!!" at the top of their lungs, or holding up a "King Kazu" banner. They went nuts when he scored a header goal off a corner kick. It was a fun game. I ate some "Demon Hot" pringles which tasted like BBQ, and ... read more

Including her adventures... Taking time out to relax and catch up on some reading Wandering around Roppongi and Roppongi Hills Shopping at Electric City Visiting the secondhand book area Wandering through the suburbs Checking out the Sumo Museum Trying to get some cash from an ATM & shopping (again!) among others... One advantage of being in Tokyo was the opportunity to relax in my own room, therefore being able to sleep in as long as I liked and stay up at night reading. Because of this, I took the opportunity to catch up on some of the books I'd missed due to being busy at uni and work during the year. During my time in Tokyo, I re-read the 5th Harry Potter book before making my way through Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I also ... read more

Including the following adventures: Reacquainting herself with Japan An evening with some expats An extravagant pasta lunch A quick tour of the town Hanging out with the Harajuku girls Visiting a temple & Shopping... & more shopping Among others... My time in Japan started slowly, with a long bus ride from Narita Airport to the centre of Tokyo, about the same distance as travelling from Murray Bridge to Adelaide. Although I haven´t been to Tokyo since I was 6, it initially seemed fairly similar to Okayama (where I lived for 6 months when I was 15), and it was good to be back in a country where I felt comfortable with the way everything worked and knew how to get around. I even surprised myself during the bus ride by half-listening to the announcement being made, ... read more
