Really enjoying Japan so far. Delicious food everywhere, and not too expensive. Glad we bought the rail pass and booked the hotels before we left though, so it feels like we're not spending our entire savings on one country - which we might be! :-S We've enjoyed Ramen (noodle soup)mostly so far, some fresh fish cakes. No sushi or yakitori yet, but there is still time!

So far, we've spent 4 nights in a business hotel in Tokyo and about to spend a night in Kamakura in a guesthouse - futon on the floor that we have to make up ourselves, shoes have to be left at the door and bamboo screens divide the rooms. It's a lovely place, just a shame it's been raining all day!

Tokyo is a lot like I imagined, with the neon signs, the high rise buildings and the thousands of people. But everything is really clean and spaced out, not as crammed in as Hong Kong was, and there are interesting little side streets with steaming restaurants and food stalls.

We've seen a lot of temples and shrines since we got here, in central Tokyo along with pretty gardens and tree lined avenues in the park, but also on a day trip to Nikko yesterday, where they are all multi-coloured, and in Kamakura today where they are further apart (ideal for a rainy day!) and more subtle in wood and green colours. All very pretty and so peaceful and relaxing to walk around. Not much wildlife yet, a squirrel that looked suspiciously like an English squirrel but thats all, and it didn't make us reach for the cameras I'm afraid. Speaking of photos - I will put some on soon, when the computer doesn't keep translating everything I soon, when the computer I'm using doesn't keep translating everything I type into Japanese and there is a USB socket! I‘m sure I‘m not in the middle of nowhere...

Keep in touch. Lots of love xx
