Hello from Japan,
We finally had a day off together and decided to go into central Tokyo to a city called Roppongi. It's basically “America-town” in Japan where all the top designers are located. Within the city of Roppongi there is a place called 'Roppongi Hills' which is where we spent most of the day. Roppongi Hills is a 40-acre site with over 200 shops and an array of cafes and restaurants with many interconnecting walkways…it’s essentially a mega-mall, but the architecture and layout made it very different from malls we have in the U.S. After we were a little tired of shopping and so we stopped to have a snack at the most interesting place, we believe called “Umu”. We think it's some kind of fetish café because as the men walk in the door they are greeted by Japanese women dressed in sexy maid outfits who say "welcome home master". As you eat your food (I ordered tortilla chips, but I’m pretty sure it was just Doritos on a plate for $5), the women dance and sing songs on stage. Some were dressed like sexy maids, but there was a whole variety of costumes that the women wore
- including nurse uniforms and “sexy“ animals. The best part about it was that there were at least 20 men sitting in the front row - singing along and performing all of the choreography (yes, somehow they knew the choreography)! It was definitely an experience to remember.
After lunch we decided to walk to the Tokyo Tower, which looks like the Eiffel Tower but is taller. We were able to get a good feel of that part of Tokyo and found some interesting shops along the way. We went to the main observatory and enjoyed the nighttime views of Tokyo. Although we weren't always sure what we were looking at, it was still very beautiful. Afterwards, we decided to take a cab back to Roppongi where we had dinner. We took a cab and were very amazed! They are some of the cleanest cars I have ever been in…the doors open and close automatically and they have doily coverings on the seat. The driver is in full uniform, wears white gloves and is extremely polite. They also have GPS, so I guess they never get lost. A little expensive, as they start the meter at 660yen which is about
$6.50, but worth it for the luxurious ride.
Once we got back to Roppongi, we had dinner at a Bamboo Lounge called “Xen”. Here, the food was great and not too expensive. We did learn however that meals are not served in succession in Japan, so we now only order what we want at that time and share. After a lovely day, we were able to find the correct train back to Shin-Urayasu and went to bed.
