The famous Golden Temple
We have come to the end of our stay in Japan, time to bring you up to date.
Kyoto has remained the same after all these years! Still full of so many interesting things to see. We have been staying in a traditional Japanese home that was once used as a sake distillary. Tatami, futon and shioji are all present and our host has made the beginning of our journey very comfortable. We have made good use of our time visiting temples, gardens, shrines and watching in amazement as the Japanese let loose during the Hanami festival which celebrates the beauty of the cherry blossoms that seem to be everywhere.
We were fortunate to spend an entire day with Emmanuels former French student Haruto who took us to the Golden Temple and to a very beautiful Zen rock garden. We were also taken to a typical Japanese town about 1 hour from Kyoto where all of the homes have thatch roofs and the people live a slow quiet life compared to the hustle of Kyoto.
We have found that the chasm between traditional Japan and that of modern Japan has widened even further. The university students have a certain look,

almost as though they have stepped out of a Manga (Japanese cartoon that many of the population read) Men and women have hairdos to make you look twice and the girls parade around in tiny mini skirts with thigh high socks and high heels. Once in a while we admire the elegance of a woman dressed in traditional kimono, this seems to be on the verge of extinction!
We celebrate every meal in Japan as we savor the many delights of Japanese cuisine. Sushi, soba, udon, tempura, yakitori, etc. This kind of food pleases the whole family, we just cant get enough!
Tomorrow we are off for new horizons as we take the Shinkansen (Bullet train) to Tokyo for our flight to HOng Kong tomorrow evening.

We are going to attempt to put photos on the blog but cannot guarantee it will work since much is in Japanese. Please click on the top picture to see the album. We wish you all well and will be in touch soon.
I pass the keyboard to Yohan who is anxiously awaiting to write to all of you!

YOHAN

Dear friends and family,
This week i am in Kyoto Japan there is lots of things to do and see. I went to see the Golden Temple, the Geishas,a rock garden, the Imperial palace and the Silver Temple and I went to the Sento. The sento is a public bath where you go naked. There is an electric bath that gives you shocks, there is a really cold bath, a really hot bath, a whirlpool bath and a sauna.
There is a big downtown with lots of stores cramped one against the other. There are also really crazy people with weird and ugly hair dos.
There are vending machines everywhere you go even in little neighborhoods.
Yours truly,
Yohan

Tatianas turn!!

Dear Classmates, Teachers, and friends,

I am in Kyoto. I have very much fun seeing temples and gardens. I loved it when we saw the Golden Temple up close. I took a lot of pictures of that temple. I also saw the Imperial Palace. I took a lot of pictures of that too. On that same day I saw the Silver Temple. It was very old.
I also went in town to see a show with the Geishas. They were beautiful. Some of them had funny hairdos. I also went to a lot of restaurants in town. I got a Hello Kitty pen and a notebook. I also like Kyoto because there is a lot of sushi and I love sushi! In the town at night there is a lot of crazy people that have weird hairdos.

I miss you guys!

Tatiana

So good to hear from you!
Hi de Ricards: Wow, it was so good to hear from you! We miss you and have been talking about your journey. Sounds like you've had a wonderful time in Japan. It was in the 80's today in Seattle - go figure. Rain is predicted for the next week which is spring break - I wish the warm weather would stick around! We went to the beach at Carkeek today and Sam wanted to walk up the trail to your house - a good memory of your going away party. Have lots of fun and keep us posted! We are thinking of you! Love, P

Serge has funky hairdo too
Hi guys, Sounds like Japan was a wonderful cultural experience and sounds like your bellies are full of great foods. I'm glad you are enjoying yourselves. Serge bought a clippers and asked me to give him a haircut. I had never done this before and now he has a funky hairdo as well. I also finally found a new hairstylist (not Serge) and my hair is a little on the funky side too. We miss you and are loving the northwest. Gros bisous. Lyne and Serge
