so i FINALLY have internet access in my room...which means MORE PICTURES! these pictures are from the trip we took to kyoto on saturday (even though i was still exhausted from osaka the night before). me, leilani, anton, bas, and leilani's roommate olga all rode our bikes to makino station, which is just down the road. we left them there and got on the the train to kyoto. and we didn't get lost this time!! we just followed olga. she knew what she was doing cause she had been here last semester too. so it was nice not being lost and confused for once! when we arrived in kyoto we met 2 of olga's japanese friends, yuka and haru. they were really nice and had agreed to show us around kyoto for the day. we were ... read more

Jeffs flight yesterday was cancelled and it seem to have pushed him back 24hrs. So he wont be coming in til later today. In fact within the next hour plus his plane should be landing, but there is no airport in Kyoto, so he will be coming from Osaka which is almost 2hours away (by shuttle). Its ok, cause I heard of some great place to hang out, Heian Shrine I think is the name- have it marked on my map. Seems like everyone likes to go to Shrines, we hear the gongs beat so many times, then I think you head off in the streets and start drinking. Fun! (I also heard something about people throwing money?!) Well, yesterday I had to go from hostel to hotel. Where Im at now is no loner in ... read more

Wow, so first I went towards Kiyomizu Temple. It was awesome! If only for the fact that you walk down a tunnel in total darkness, with you hand against the wall until you reach the end. Kinda freaked me out, I dont know if Ive ever been in total darkness like that before. But it was an awesome, and short, experience. Then it was off to Ginkakuji Temple and the Path of Philosophy! The Temple was amazing! There was nothing but deep nature all around. I got to go up, for a little bit, the side of a mountain and see trees so tall and old I cant image the world they lived in when they first started sprouting. Zen gardens in front of mountains and tall trees, very breathtaking. Walking the path of philosophy was ... read more

Because I am now a master of the bus system in Kyoto, YES!, I was able to figure out how to do everything on my list. But one thing. But thats not a lack-of-knowing-how-to-get-there, there was just no room for me :(. Anyways!! It was AWESOME! So I made it to the Imperial Palace, and I had to go to this side building, show my passport and sign in. They gave me a slip saying it was ok to visit the grounds, but I could only go in at 2pm with a tour. It was before 10am. Wow, what to do?! I KNOW! Walk a few blocks down and hang out at Kyotos International Manga Museum! I go there, and realize there are some cool things, but for the most part it is walls and walls ... read more

So today didnt work out like I thought it would. I wanted to go to Himeji Castle, but that didnt work. I took the bus like the paper said, but then I got somewhere... and im not sure if that was the right station.. but i dont think ti was... cause.... there were no trains!! Subway and Bus only. So I had NO idea where I was. Took some bus that some officer toldme take, but he didnt speak good English, and I couldnt talk well in Japanese. So I think he just told me to get on some random bus. I was going to just take the bus back to Gion, but I listened to him, and it ended up dropping me off somewhere that I had to walk 30min. back to my room. Not ... read more

Wow, I really set myself out to go to this one castle, but it didnt work out that way. I ended up going towards a few temples instead. Kinda wish I payed better attention cause I wanted to go to this castle today seeing as how it was going to be closed until 1/4/08. Ohwell, theres so much to do in Kyoto, there is no way that I can get it all done. Ill try and get some pic up in the morning from Kyoto. Also, Im half brain dead so I dont rem. all the names of everything I went to. Ill have to add those in later too. I went to this one Pagoda that is the largest in all of Tokyo. It was built long ago, and was so amazing. Next to it ... read more

So Im here in Kyoto! I woke up early this morning to pack my bag to leave from Tokyo to Kyoto. It seems like Tokyo was just a dream now. I cant believe I was in one of the world's largest cities! I remembered how to get through the train system in Ueno to Tokyo Station, from there I took the bullet train to Kyoto! Very lucky, cause it was leaving in 10min. Next train afterwards was going to leave in over 2hours! From there I make it safely to Kyoto Station, I know I am to take a bus and stop at this one point. I ask a girl near by on the bus if this one street was the road I needed, and it wasnt. But it was good I asked her cause she ... read more

I just made it to Kyoto today, thanks to some awesome people from Kobe they helped me find my hostel. Otherwise I would have been lost again, and then needed another taxi ride. Anyways, there is only a lap top here that I can use, so I need to get going cause other people need to use the comptuer. But already Ive had a great day traveling, and resting, and will write more later! MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone!!!... read more

Hi, This morning I got up and went down to the basement for breakfast. and no its in a different area to the communal baths! Made a bit of a social boo boo. I forget to take my house slippers off, I realised halfway across the floor as I was looking back at all the Japanese faces staring at me as I slid back the screen doors so I kinda skipped/Floated/panicked my way back to the doors and threw my slipped off then re-entered looking very sheepish. It seems I am the only westerner staying at this hotel but the staff are really friendly and dont mind my really poor Japanese, as they are very good at english. So I had a half day tour of Kyoto this morning. hmmm filled with the usual complaining Americans, ... read more
