In fall of 2007 I and my family went on a trip to japan. After getting off of the plane, we went to visit my mother’s part of the family. I had once been in Japan already, though I do not remember very much of that trip. My grandparents were excited, I had a lot of fun bonding with them, we would joke around and sometimes I would feel overwhelmed because I am not so used to listen to too many people speak to me in Japanese and yet I felt comfortable being around them. At the first day in Japan, many of my cousins came around, some of them I really missed, and some of them I met that day. I felt joyful to be able to meet cousins, who I did not know. We would fool around yelling random things and getting to know each other.
We went to visit one of many temples around Fukuoka, the one we went to visit was really big, I felt smaller than I usually do, it was intimidating by how big and cold the inside was, later I understood what it was, then I felt like part of the ancient empire
of Japan, I felt “important” pure of my imagination. We went to visit smaller temples around the other one, there was this one temple in which the visitors, if they wanted, they could help clean the temple, so we did. It was exhausting, we did not clean the entire temple, but we did clean most of it. After finishing cleaning up, I realize I was a really lazy person for getting tired for like after 10 minutes of cleaning.
Japan has lots of markets. We went to visit one, my mom was a friend of a mochi stand owner, who we went to visit and gave us free mochi. It was delicious, the market was crowded and warm, and I felt confused and lost for the crowd of people. At the night, Japanese people use to (some of them still do) they sleep on the floor, though the floor is not that hard because most of them are made out of “Tatami” a type of mant of plants. I felt rally jetlag so I could not complain. The “bed” was just a simple soft mant, it was really cold and uncomfortable to sleep on the floor, but I got
used to it.
My mother went out with her family, so she left me and my siblings in a day care. In there I actually felt annoyed because we came to Japan to visit family and travel, but instead we were at a day care. I liked the activities they put us to do one of them was to sleep. Japan is also famous for the trains, and well, we went to a train station, it was really AWESOME, it was large and I really enjoyed the spots because you could turn around the chairs so you could be facing the person in front of you, and there was a food stand, it was really fun.
In Fukuoka there was this celebration called “Yamakasa” in which people would dress up in a certain outfit and carry a big statue and run around together. I did not like the outfit because it was cold outside and I felt really uncomfortable. While being in the “Yamakasa” we were able to be on the statue people were carrying because “we were from another country and we could see it with another perspective” (words from my wise mother), it was scary but
the statue itself was beautiful because of all those colors, but the face of the statue was terrifying which scared me a lot. Ater the Yamakasa was over, me and my cousins were really tired, it was already night and it was cold, I felt colder than usual because of the time and the outfit. I had a really good time in the Yamakasa.
My family was invited over a wedding, I had to dress in a beautiful kimono, but actually I did not like to be in it because I was overdressed with lots of decorating accessories which were uncomfortable. It was one of the first weddings I ever attended and it was really overwhelming because of the people talking to me.
On out last day in Japan we went to walk around and saw beautiful trees. Their leaves were brown and orange because it was fall. I felt relaxed, it was breezy but not cold. The airport was modern and I felt upset because I was really enjoying myself in Japan. There were also many stands, like a lot. I bought a watch and I actually really liked the airport. I really enjoyed my
trip to Japan, I miss my family a lot...
