Basically the biggest event of the year on Yuge, the autumn harvest festivals, are finally over. Each of the main neighborhoods holds a festival that continues for about three days, so all of the island’s festivals put together span over three weeks. There are three main festivals on Yuge; Kamiyuge (upper Yuge island), the smallest is my neighborhood- Hikino, and the biggest- Shimoyuge (lower Yuge island). I planned on boycotting my neighborhood’s festival this year because women are not allowed to participate in certain festivities (something typical of the Shinto religion), but at the last minute I was coerced into going. So, I ended up participating in all three festivals this year. Another plan I had- not accepting drinks at the festivals this year- also went down the drain. Last year I felt too rude to ... read more

The regional competition for the junior high school English speeches was last weekend in Matsuyama, a city about two hours south of me on mainland Shikoku. If you were reading my blogs at this time last year, you will remember that I went to this same competition last year with my student Emiko who left victoriously with second place. No such luck this time, although I thought at least one of the two students whom I went with should have won second or third place. I'm not just saying this because I have a biased opinion about my students. I genuinely think that the competition results were unfair. The girl who won first prize gave a speech that was obviously the best, but, suspiciously she came from the same junior high school that the boy who ... read more

I am always getting emails about events happening on mainland Shikoku that other foreign English teachers plan. Unfortunately, I rarely attend any of the gatherings because living out here in the middle of the Inland Sea makes it really difficult to get there and back. However, I got an email about a white water rafting trip that was happening on the Yoshino River in a quasi-national park in mid-eastern Shikoku, and I couldn’t pass it up. It’s also interesting to hang out with other foreign English teachers because it’s always such a diverse group of people (rather than me and a bunch of Japanese people, like usual). In fact, I was the only person from the U.S. on this trip. There were people from England, Wales, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Canada. The town where our rafting ... read more

Well, year two of project Yuge Island has officially begun! The opening ceremonies have been held, the undoukai has come and gone, and I am now in the midst of the chaos that is fall semester at Japanese schools. It was a bit rough readjusting to my life here again. I had to go to school the next day after my flight back from the U.S. I was extremely jetlagged, and I had caught a cold on top of that. It took me a few days to be able to think clearly again. The heat didn’t help either. It was swelteringly hot everyday. It was around 37 degrees (upper 90s Fahrenheit) on average with unbearable humidity. I remembered this from last year, but for some reason I had thought my memories must have been exaggerated. But ... read more

Denis comes to town! Well, after a short memorable year in Japan, I finished up a language course and headed back to the island to the inevitable heat awaiting me. The smells and sounds that had welcomed me in a year before had once again returned during my three week stint at the YWCA Foreign language school. Happy I hadn’t retuned home a Christian or a young woman, Denis decided to pay me a visit for the glory of the island. It was actually probably one of the best weeks that I have had during my time here and it definitely the best time I have had on the island. During the summer places like Ikina come alive as various matsuris and long awaited holiday finally come around, and the Japanese allow themselves a break of ... read more

Tomorrow I fly over the pacific and most of the length of the U.S., back to West “by god” Virginia! It’s only for a month vacation, of course, before I come back here to Yuge for another year of madness. And I have been thinking a lot about how I’m really relieved I’m not leaving Yuge and flying back to the U.S. for good tomorrow. Yes, of course I miss my hometown, friends and family…but I’m definitely not ready to leave the “Yugetopia” as the locals call the island here. I have many goals set for the next year I will spend here, and none of them would be possible to reach anywhere else. I want to get better at my Japanese (of course); I want to learn more shamisen; I want to learn more ... read more

THIS BLOG HAD MANY MORE PICTURES AND VIDEOS BUT THE ANGER OF THE STORM SEEMS TO HAVE DELETED AND MESSED WITH LOADS OF THEM. Typhoon No.4 A story best told in pictures I believe. This rolled in early on Saturday morning to the sound of the Tanoy warning us to buckle down. I had just enough time to dash out, grab my plants in from eh balcony and cut down the bamboo fence I had erected to safeguard for the constant barrage of people peeping into the dojo. We had therefore 3 days to kill and Ethan and I, who had just made it off his island before it kicked in, decided to make previsions to survive the oncoming Mcwrath of god. I.e. get the beers in, get the waterproofs on, and get out there. Don’t ... read more

But last weekend I managed to escape the island during a couple of dry days to celebrate Nick’s (English teacher on neighboring island, Ikina) birthday in Hiroshima city. We went to our favorite team, the Hiroshima Carps’, baseball game against the Tokyo Giants. Japanese baseball games are really crazy and fun. Of course, I can’t compare them to baseball games in the U.S., because I’ve never been to one in the U.S. But, another American I was with, Adam, said that baseball fans in the U.S. are nowhere near as enthusiastic and crazy as Japanese baseball fans are. I believe him because the fans here just don’t stop cheering through the whole game, and it’s not just random ... read more

So, I’ve started to get complaints from several of my readers after not posting an entry for over a month. Sorry! Things have been a bit slow in the Inland Sea. I went for a month without going off the island, so I haven’t taken many pictures of anything new. My life is pretty much at school, and I don’t know how many more pictures of Japanese kids in uniforms giving the peace sign you really want to see (I never get tired of it since I know all of my students, but I don’t know how my readers feel). Well, just so that we’re all on the same page: The almost non-existent spring has passed, and we’re now in the midst of the rainy season. Last week it rained every day of the week, ... read more

Sorry family. So what do I do on my island? Yes, I am hit with that troubling problem created in an effort to thrust rural Japanese into he world of the 21st centaury international culture, whether they like it or not, or having to live in basically the middle of no-where - alone. Now, that is obviously the job description and in a way what I signed up for. In a way. But it doe... read more
