On to Palau Weh otherwise known as Sabang What a stunning island fantastic but even now with most of the NGO staff gone from Banda there is an accommodation problem especially at weekends. We arrived at the ferry port and locals sort the transport out part of the way in a bus then they unloaded us into a Taxi. Nice driver who is the main driver for Iboih beach. We wanted to stay at Gapang so he took us round looking for a place Ellie wasn’t feeling to good so looked for AC it was late, we ended up at one of the Government places Laguna Resort big bungalows 250000Rp a night absolutely crap. Toilet stank like a gent’s urinal that had never been cleaned. The rooms are huge soulless and depressing ours had more ants ... read more

With the male crew agents gone, I finally had Mrs. Gonzales to myself. We high tailed it North through Sumatran jungle counties, in search of Banda Ache. We didn’t fall in love, but strong friendships were made. The bus was typical Indonesian fare: bald tyres, cramped seats , three hours late, shocks that had been replaced by a Panzers, Muslim karaoke blasting till 3AM and of course the spasmatic driver that switches the wheel with his partner. This was done in between 2nd and 3rd, while the bus was still in "flight". "Amazing skills", I thought, only to fully be appreciated under heavy American sleeping sedatives and two 40oz Bintangs. The other two foreigners almost lost their late night rice and tea dinner. After one uses an Indonesian bus, there is a total disregard to all ... read more

Aceh, Aceh, Aceh... So here is the story, We went to Pulau Weh and felt very love/hate about it. YES, it's a beautiful, tropical island, with palm trees everywhere, and soft powdery white sand beaches with the most clear blue water you could imagine. But, perception is always relevant to where you've been and where you are going, I believe. And I have to admit that we have been quite blessed with delicious, deserted, tropical beach paradises already in Indonesia. And as easy as we are to please....the circumstances just weren't right. The first night we got there, it was dark already when we arrived (which always puts a damper on things...especially when it's also raining), We went to check into a bungalow (reputed to be the cleanest on the beach) to find it was completely ... read more

After jumping city to city, my body was starting to crave some place that moved at a slower pace. That is when I found Pulau Weh. It is off the northern tip of Sumatra. The small town I stayed in was Iboih. It was a great surprise for me. I was only planning on staying for one week to do some diving, but ended up staying two. The town itself is just a small walking path with several very rustic bungalows on or near the water. Power isn't 24 hour and is often out. Made for some very quiet nights. When I first arrived to the island of Pulau Weh (often called Sabang) I met up with a South African, Richard. He has been living in London, but for the last 6 months he's been ... read more

Slung into Singapore our now worldly and bearded boys are on the return journey, the Odyssey has commenced and with it a new chapter of tribulations, considerations and felicitations unfolds. Our stay with the Lion People can only be described as fabulous. This was thanks to our Singapore connection; Sarah. Having been whisked off from the airport we soon found ourselves on the 17th floor of Regency Park. Condominium luxury lifestyle ensued over Gin and Tonics, marble floors and practically panoramic views of the city. We spent our time getting ourselves together, making and executing decisions, preparing and gathering our thoughts. All the while breathing in Singapore’s atmosphere. Hawker centers, Little India, Chinatown, Clarke Quay, Orchard Road and Raffles may sound familiar? Throwing peanut shells at one another in the Long Bar at Raffle’s Hotel, ... read more

On the weekend of New Years Jo, Me, Nerys, Remko and Erica went back to Sabang for some chill out time. I stayed in a slightly better Bungalow than my last visit (Although Jo was adamant that it was merely a hut “Bungalows don’t go on stilts!”). It got me thinking about how much else has changed since last time I was here, only 2 months ago. When I came here last time I had no ties, my life in a backpack. Now I’m back with a job, friends. On New Year’s Eve I thought aloud, “What did I do to get this lucky.” “Well it certainly wasn’t dancing like a crazy monkey.” replied Jo, charmingly, as usual. I’m not quite sure I agree with her. New Year’s Eve was cool. There were a big group ... read more

Well here’s where things kinda just happened. I returned from my tropical island, and the next day, Nick brought me into the office of the NGO he worked for. He’d already talked to the head office in New York, and they were pretty keen to take me on. In fact they said that if Nick didn’t want me in Aceh, they had work for me in Africa! It was just a case of them checking out my reference - something that I don’t think anyone has ever done for me! Oh yeah and the medical test.... For those of you who don’t know, my biggest phobia in the WHOLE world has been needles. I was convinced that I was physiologically incapable of giving any sort of blood sample. But it only goes to reason that to ... read more

So what does an Australian guy who works in Indonesia, with only 2 days holiday do when there's no ferry - He charters a boat, and drags me along for the ride (and to share the cost). Sure, it totally blew the days budget, but, hey it'd be an adventure. As it turned out abit too much of an adventure. A 6m boat, which the driver pretty much surfed down the ocean swells, a diesel engine right next to my ear, and I got drenched. But at least by the end of it I was on a tropical paradise. There was one catch to my plan. This being the biggest holiday of the year, and this being the best holiday destination for the 1800 ex-pats in Banda Aceh, accommodation was somewhat at a premium. However I ... read more
