This short and sweet story is about Mr. Lahmudin Surkian. He lives in a village next to a forestry concession I was recently working in. In fact he was the 1st person to live there, before it was a village and before it was a forestry concession. A time when herds of elephants still roamed the land and tigers, too. Mr. Lahmudin not only feels a special connection to the forests, but even to specific trees. Maybe it was his time spent living with the Anak Dalam, the children of the forest, many of whom don't have contact with the "modern" world and live close to nature. However the connection was nurtured, it is deep and sincere, just like the twinkle in Mr. Lahmudin's eyes. He's certainly less than enthused by the slash and burn agriculture ... read more

Lay-deez and Genlmenn, I have crossed 'Ground Zero' in the Equator at 08.30 this morning. Nearly missed the sign as I was so intent on watching the Garmin. It infact placed the hallowed line about 100m further south but whatever. I've cracked the northern hemisphere and am now properly 'down under' Just as hot, humid and wet. Very jungly and infact nothing short of stunning scenery. Sadly unable to sojourn in the oddly? appropriately named Panti but am now in Bukitttinggi. Great names arn't they? Got to get to Jakarta in about 10 days to renew visa. I'm told the road is good from here. Just as well because up north it was trully apalling. All otherwise going well. Nose peeling again inspite of factor 30 and sun even tanning me through my cotton shirt. Fearsome UV ... read more

Sumatera is getting louder everyday, sometimes every hour it seems. We were just in a small village high up in the mountains where the major passtime is making small motor bikes very loud by cutting off the mufflers and racing them back and forth all day on the only good strip of road for 50 km (which happened to be in front of our homestay). The area surrounding the village was stunningly beautiful so as long as we were hiking it was pleasant. A recap of the last week or so: Bukittinggi had many wonderful warung (food stalls) but had many more loud mosques so the theme there was day trips. The villages and forests in the surrounding area were a great escape from the noise of civilization. One day we took a train through the ... read more

Actually, this trip was unthinkable before. You know, what's in Kerinci in addition to the sleeping volcano and cough all day long? But I did not expect, this journey becomes an exciting adventure. my friend (Elias Widhi) and I was assigned the office to make a documentary about the Kerinci. tell the life of society and how they are friends with nature. to be honest, initially I was not interested. because at that time I was concentrating on making documentary films that are more challenging than just visiting a cinnamon garden which usually grow along the Bukit Barisan. We flew to Padang, West Sumatra on March, 19 2009. We must to use early morning flight, because we will take eight hours of travel from to Sungai Penuh, Kerinci. Having met the driver who picked us up ... read more

Every once in a while I like to have a quick look around the countryside without numbing my behind on the hard seat of a crowded rickety bus or elbowing my way through often hopeless crowds at railway stations. But best of all I enjoy flying short domestic legs on exotic airlines, the stranger their logos or hopelessly odd their aircraft the better. Indonesia is serviced by a great number of domestic airlines, most of them making use of the ubiquitous Boeing 737-200, presumably inherited from larger airlines such as Garuda or Malaysian that got sick of them or bankrupted. My favourite trick is collecting time tables and trying to puzzle together an itinerary that will take me in a sweeping circle back to my starting point within the same day. It is no easy task, ... read more
