Monday, June 9th 2014 The trip technically began two days earlier on Saturday, when Kenton and I got on a plane to Jakarta. We met Bill (our guide from the International Rhino Foundation) there and chatted a bit before take off, but the weekend was mostly spent in the air going from Dulles to Tokyo, then Tokyo to Jakarta. The flights were fine. The only noteworthy thing was that I always pick a window seat and Kenton picks an aisle, but we lucked into an empty seat between us on the first flight so we didn't have to awkwardly chat with a stranger for 14 hours. Score! Also - we sat in the last row and they ran out of the 'breakfast' dish they were serving just before landing, so we got served 'dinner' again. Whatevs. ... read more

Bukittinggi (Sumatra, Indonesia) – Bandung (Java, Indonesia): Distance covered so far (since 20 Dec): 6927 km We have made it through the plantations, the jungle, along the coast and over the mountains to reach the southern-most point of Sumatra! With one final cockroach infested hotel (Mel squeaked whilst on the loo, as a cockroach scampered over her legs), we rolled into the port of Bakauheni and onto the boat – Java bound. What a relief! What pride! Cycling hot, hilly, humid, bumpy, sticky, insecty Sumatra, as the subject of everyone’s curiosity has been the hardest thing we have ever done – it has roasted, poached, smashed, pummelled and drained us. Sumatra turned out to be MUCH bigger than it looked on the map, and it has a climate apparently designed to upset cyclists. A truly beautiful ... read more

I've finally got the message. It's the wetter season not the drier one as I thought. That explains the rain I've been peddling in for that last 2 weeks! I'm now in Bander Lumpung near the eastern tip of Sumatra. Having crossed the mountain/volcano range south of Bukit Tinggi the scenery has been pretty dull. Mostly rubber plantation which is not remotely attractive or tropical in aspect. The resulting latex also has a bit of a pong. So the decision to cross the mountains was probably a bit of a mistake in hindsight. A dutchman on a bike I met in Bukit Tinggi, Eric, took the coast road south, stayed in beach huts and swam in the Indian ocean. Well, next time..... Diet: Nasi and Mei Goreng. twice daily with or without chicken or a boiled ... read more

We had a hell of a time getting out of Sumatra, and while in south Sumatra. I think it's a good idea every once and a while to write about the things that go wrong - in this case, many, many things all together - so at least the picture of travelling in these beautiful, exotic, 3rd world places is balanced. The vast majority of travellers fly from Padang to Jakarta (Java). We the ever stubborn overlanders opted for the other way. Instead, when we left Kerinci we headed east, somewhat blindly. There's very little travel information for south sumatra, and little english is spoken. After arriving in Sungai Penuh we walked around the very busy small town looking for a bus that left earlier than 8 in the evening (this was noonish). We ascertained that ... read more
