After leaving Gili Meno we headed to Senarau ready to meet one of Morris' friends that runs climbs up Rinjani. We planned to do a 3day 2 night trek up to the summit which is just under 4ooom high!
Once we arrived into Senarau calling in at a chemist nurse place to get some antibiotics for an infected mozzie bite for Ste's leg........we were greeted by Kario Morris's friend, a small guy with loads of Afro hair!!!! We put our bags into a very dirty room we headed up to the organisers restaurant. The restaurant overlooked Mount Rinjani, it didn't seem to look as high as it did from Gili Meno as we were already 900m high in the small town. We got a drink and then sat down to talk about prices and tours. We had been quoted some very contrasting prices for these treks, as everybody in Gili Meno sells them! He stared off with a printed itinerary with expensive prices on it. When we pulled a face he said OK lets forget about this and we agreed on a price for a trek for the 3 days 2 nights then including transport back to Bali when we
had finished. We met a french couple who were climbing with us in the morning.......We had food and went back to our gritty room to sort our small bags out to take. You have porters that take the equipment like tents sleeping bags and food etc then you carry what ever you feel you need, then leave your large bags in there lock up. At this point Ste's leg was still very red and starting to swell...........we went to bed!
'beep beep beep beep!!!!' the alarm went off at 5am ready to meet for breakfast at 6.30am....Ste tried to get out of bed and he could not put any weight on his mozzie bitten leg and it had made his lower leg and ankle swell! We certainly were not going any where today. I went and told the guide and the boss who were fine and said they would get the local nurse to look at it and we could go the next day, providing his leg was good. we had a pancake for breakfast then the nurse arrived she confirmed that it was indeed an infection and gave him more tablets to take then insisted on 'getting the
bad out'. This involved squeezing the bite! I have never seen Ste in so much pain, she was evil. After that ordeal Kario appeared at our door.........Kario who we had chatted to for a while the night before was heart broken! An Australian lady had broke his heart he asked me about all kinds of things that she said and asked what they meant, i was happy to help this poor man at first........He came and sat with us insisting that we go to a nearby waterfall with him the catch being that we have to pay him as he would be our guide!!!! We said maybe and he went. After a few hours of sleep we woke up to guess who????? Kario! but this time Kario with rice wine, he wanted us to join him at the waterfall where he wanted to just go and drown his sorrows. This did not cost us anything so we agreed, we took our soap and toothbrushes along as the thought of having a shower in our rooms bathroom turned my stomach, it was like something out of the film saw! It took us about half an hour to get to the waterfall
all the way Kario asking me questions about text messages he had sent and she had sent, i had turned into an agony aunt! The water fall was freezing, We both got the soap out and had a good wash bit like a scene from the old bounty adverts (not)!!!!
We once again went back had some food, which was a sandwich as we were running out of money and there is no ATM there and we had given all our money to them for the trek.
'beep beep beep beep!!!!!' 5am again and the alarm was going off.........this time Ste could move his leg but it was still swollen. As there is no fresh water up there and if he needed to get back we would have to carry him, we decided that it best not to go at all and just get our money back or as much of it as we could back! We went up to tell Kario who was to be our guide for 3 days which to be honest i do not think i could have put up with......as i am struggling walking up a volcano him asking 'so you think she
The Ferry
The locals Get there head down for the journey loves me still'. The guy we had dealt with told us we needed to wait for the boss as he had the money and the boss was 2hrs away in Senggigi!!!!! we waited a while then went and packed up our bags then took our posts at a table in the restaurant looking at the mountain we should be climbing as the sun rose!
6 hours later.............
We got a bit sick of waiting and so asked where the boss was and how long he would be we were polite, then the guy started telling us that we would have to pay for this that and the other as we did not climb! At this point we had just slept in the room and had a pancake for breakfast off them no more!!!! He raised his voice at Ste and i told him that we just wanted to wait to speak to his boss, this shut him up. Eventually the boss arrived and we asked about our transport back to Senggigi then Bali........he tried to charge us more for the transport and for the unwanted porters!!! we agreed on the money for the porters and told him that
we would make our own way to senggigi then Bali! We got most of our money back and hopped i a Hyundai getz type car with a crazy driver that constantly laughed whilst waving to everybody along the way listening to Bob Marley!!!! ha ha ha.
It was sad leaving Rinjani behind and a disappointment for us both to have been sat at the bottom of it for 2 days waiting to climb, but at the end of the day your health is more important and Rinjani is not going any where! so another holiday is in order....the list is growing!
We have now come to Senggigi, Senggigi is a resort in Lombok which resembles Spain! We just needed to come some where normal and stay in a clean room to let Ste's leg get better. We are staying in a very nice bungalow that has a garden outdoor bathroom complete with plants, it's great you have a wee listening to the birds looking at the flowers so peaceful! We have been here two days now and just relaxed, Ste's leg is nearly healed after many antibiotics and other tablets that he was given. We are leaving in
A salesman
this is indonesian sales tactics - climb the wall if need be the morning to go back to Bali, We are going to Ubud a bit more of a cultural place. Off for tea now in a really nice local place that serves fab soup and Greek salad, a refreshing change from rice and noodles! The family run business has her husband as the chef, he has worked in lots of top hotels and the food is divine!
