Hello All, I am settling into life in Bontang. I know where to buy my groceries, how to work my washing machine, and where to find drinking water at school. As in orientation, my days start at 6am. School begins at 7, and many students are there until 5 or 6 in the evening. My days end anywhere from noon to 5pm. At school, I have been introducing myself to classes and observing lessons. Students have asked me about everything from my opinions on global warming and the upcoming presidential election to my favorite Indonesian food and impressions of Indonesia. The other American in my town got asked what she thought the first time she tried rice. That is, the student did not know we have rice in the US! What we consider personal questions in ... read more

Hello all, I just walked to an internet café, in the rain, from my new home in Bontang. Thus far, everything is going well. My house is very nice - I have air conditioning, hot water, and a washing machine. Everyone at the school I am going to be working at has been very friendly. My counterpart in particular has been very helpful. He took me shopping, showed me around the school, and gave me a tour of Bontang. By counterpart, I mean the teacher that has been assigned to be my “go-to person” at the school. My counterpart, Eugeng, has taught English for over 16 years. He now teaches one English class and spends the rest of his time on administrative work. He, along with the counterparts of the other ETAs, met us in Bandung ... read more

Good day to you woodland folk and to the army of the traveling gypsies. So word on the street is that I am back in the land of the shield, spear and William Webb Ellis trophy-hooray, yippie, goodie, (another happy excited word goes here)!! So the word is indeed true, but I don’t know what it is doing in the street. I am home and happy to see the family and the few friends that are still actually residing within the borders of our beautiful country. I will be here for another 6 days before I jet off again to Australia for three weeks for a family holiday, my life really isn’t fair at the moment, for others that is. No it should be a really sweet time with the family and I am so unbelievably ... read more

Recently back from a trip to Derawan it’s a pain to get to but worth the effort. Arrived in Indonesia by our usual route to Jakarta taking the Air Asia flight to Balikpapan the next day booked well in advance and costing only about 200000Rp a bargain for sure. Took a taxi to Samarinda 200,000 Rp locals said we were being ripped off but not to badly it did take 2.5 hours to get to. Taxi driver said Samarinda not like Balikpapan Samarinda broken. This is because Balakpapan has lots of Expats and oil money. We went there to sort out a trip to Kutai National park on the way back, we had no problems meeting up with guides by the way though they wanted around 1.5 million for a 2 day trip including all transport ... read more

Itabornelainen valtavayla on syvalta sisamaasta kohti Samarindan kaupunkia ja merta mutkitteleva ruskeavetinen Amazon-tyyppinen joki, jonka rannoilla on mielenkiintoisen nakoisia tolppien varaan rakennettuja kylia. Pari yota vietin Muara Muntaissa ja siina valissa moottorikanooteilla kavin Mancongin perinnekylassa, jonka laitamilla on viela jaljella pienia rippeita entisista mahtavista sademetsista. Muuten kaikki puut on jo hakattu ja poltettu aikaa sitten...... read more

After finding there were no boats to Sulawesi for 1 month Great !! We diverted our trip to Kalimantan. We flew to the oil town of Balikpapan and jumped staright on a bus to Benjamasin(Welcome back to the world of bumpy busses). Benjamasin is the Venice of Kalimantan with impressive floating food markets and floating houses, we did a couple of boat tours here which were great such a different way of life on the waters edge (Pretty smelly too!!) We headed next into the country side and the Loksado hills to visit tribal villages and do a bit of jungle walking. On arrival at the town of Kandangan we Kind of got stranded The so called easy trip to Loxado wasn't so, as transport had all gone and the local drivers wanted a small ... read more

Derawan Island group off Berau Kalimantan Paradise how long. We arrived at Derawan, the main island in the group and went first to stay at Lestari losmen, As others have commented the best rooms are over the sea on stilts, rooms up the back not so nice and pretty stuffy. There was a long walk to the toilet at the back which didn’t go down to well in the middle of the night. Main problem for us was that there was a Polish Dive operation staying there next door to us, they were nice people and we became friendly with them they run tours from Poland at budget prices both to Derawan and Papua. Staying 3 months in each and moving all there kit in the middle of the season. The problem was that there room ... read more

Two days on the road are ahead of me. I am on my way to Banjarmasin, a town in southern Kalimantan. Because of its channels and waterways it is nicknamed the Venice of Borneo. My first leg go from Kumai to the inland rivertown of Palangkaraya, meaning “big and holy place”. The view is is little inspiring. Most of the jungle has ben cut down, or even more vastefull-burned down. There are big areas where black logs still stand upright like fingers accusingly pointing to the sky. Frquently we meet trucks carrying logs to the many small roadside sawmills busy in cutting the branch that they sit on. Litterally. Then it is more uplifting to see tucks carrying rattanpalms. This is a crop unable to grow without jungle. They are climbing palms depending on larger trunks ... read more

Tanjung Puting My reason for visiting Kumai is Tanjung Puting Nationalpark, a junglearea on the other side of the river. It was declared a gamereserve allready in 1935, and got its nationalparkstatus in 1982. It has suffered from weak protection and a lack of ruleenforcing, but it has avoided destruction. Yet. So far luck has been better than the action. Now it seems that authorities to some extent have started to recognise the areas big biological value. Here is mangrove-an extremely important vegetationtype-did you know that even life on many big coralreefs need mangrove? Their offspring often have a lifestage in the shelteringmangrove, beside-it hinder erosion. Here is swap and wetland. The jungle itself is one of Kalimantans biggest remaining patches of jungles of its kind. The park cover 3040 squarekilometers, but it only reaches 30 ... read more

So we flew to Changi (again) and from there we caught a flight into Jakarta, Indonesia. The first thing we noticed about Indonesia was how unwieldy the currency is. Following the economic crisis in 1998 you can now get 17,350 rupiah to the pound. Thus we withdrew a modest amount of cash and became instant millionaires! The only problem is then carrying it around, putting it into my money belt made me look suddenly six months pregnant. Nevermind. We spent only one night in Jakarta, a huge sprawling city, before flying on to Semarang. Here we planned to buy tickets to hop over to Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of Borneo. Unfortunately all flights were full for a couple of days so we ended up kicking around Semarang for 3 nights. We stayed in the very nice ... read more
