‘Orangutan!’ my guide excitedly shouts, pointing up a tree, where a shadowy ape looks down on us from up high. The sack full of ants which had fallen down on me from a low hanging branch, when we had glided with our rickety longboat through the flooded forest, was quickly forgotten. Just a minute ago, I had shrieked like a little baby because ants were crawling all over me. Nasty little bitin... Read Full Entry

Thinking back to danau sentarum and port blair
Hello Ralf,we met a few years ago in the andamans (port Blair..) i am following your blog since then and its always interresting, this entry is especially interesting cause I ve beento danau sentarum almost 20 years ago while crossing Kalimantan from Pontianak(up the Kapuas) to Samarinda(down the mahakam) whith a week of walking thru the jungle fRom one punan village to another very nice but exausting trip. In danau sentarum i still have the sound of the zikadas in my head a little like a rotating saw but verry nice. Right now I am in madagascar which is fantastic place to travel, but a little bit lonesome if your frensh isnt to good. I have got one more week left than I have to start my trial(working) back in Germany. So travel hati-hati and pelan-pelan like anytime. Maybe its possible to meet you next winter in Indonesia be sure to visit Banda its a very nice place. All the best. Jens

Wow!
Twenty years ago you were there! And you did the cross-Borneo-trek! You know what they charge for that now? More or less 10 million rupiah, if you are on your own. One might or might not be able to get it cheaper, problem is the stupid boats. To got to those villages on both ends you have to charter boats these days. Or so they say. I guess, if I had tried, I would have tried to hitch a lift with a cargo vessel of some sort. Anyway, Madagascar is high on my list of destinations, but well, must continue with Indonesia first. Next year Indo... Could be possible. I will only be able to get as far as the lower half of Sulawesi this year, so next year will be the upper half and the start of the spice islands... So who knows? Thanks for commenting.

Amazing nature!
Thanks for sharing. Never knew Kalimantan is a wealth of hidden gem?

And I only scratched the surface!
There is so much more out there. Danau Sentarum is just one of many hidden gems. Thanks for the comment!

Guide and boat
Love the photo of you with the guide photo bombing you. (Photo 20) It looks like you served as a source of amusement for this guy - and that's a good thing.

Ha, ha!
Yeah, I thought it was a funny picture. It is the boat driver actually. The guide took the photo. He was mighty interested in my camera. At one point I could hardly get him to part with it ;)

Cross borneo
We had the same problems 20 years ago, the boats are very expensive. But I was lucky. On the pelniboat to Pontianak I met an Australian girl maureen , I told her about the trek and she joint me.in potussibau we were about to head back to pontianak, when around the next corner there has been three austrians who wanted to do it too.for all five of us it was possible. I still know at this time I have been the firsttime a millionaire in my life, I exchanged a million rupiahs in one thousand rupiah bills,a big pile.at this time one thousand was still worth something. The Kapuas boats are more expensive than the mahakam boats. On the mahakam its a short boatride to the next village, than there are local boats that are by far less time expensive. The boatride down the mahakam is very nice. The walk is nice, but seven days of rice and fish 3times a day takes its toll. When we came to the first village there was a small bakery, we ate everything. So good luck, and see you possibly next year in Sulawesi Jens

Singing in the rain
Raining cats & dogs, ants, and raining so much you don't care. Then it clears and what is before you is glorious. Stunning pics Ralf of a lest forgotten piece of paradise. I can hear the jungle calling.

The birds were singing anyway
Even in the rain. The ants were less pleased after they rained on me, I brushed them off and they fell to a watery grave. Cycle of life I suppose. Some fish enjoyed them me thinks.
