On Monday the 3rd of July we arrived in Bali. Bliss bliss bliss!
We were really tired and decided to stay in Sanur which is where we usually stay. the hotel we normally go to was fully booked so we stayed at the
Gazebo Beach Hotel as we found a good deal. This is on the beach and on the main street so we figured it would be a great little treat to ourselves. Unfortunately we were given the cheapest room at the hotel so cancelled our second night after hearing a rat being attacked and killed by a snake in the walls. Yes this happened. We woke up early in the morning, chatting, minding our own business as all of a sudden we hear this chase in the wall all the way through the ceiling and down the wall again when a rat squeaked in agony. We were horrified and neither of us said anything for awhile, then about 20 seconds later we could still hear the rat fighting for his life. Then we could hear the killer which we think was a snake slither back to the other side of the wall. Yikes!
So in conclusion I would
not recommend this hotel..
As we decided to move to a different hotel we figured we might as well go somewhere else and come back to Sanur a bit later before Nathan goes back to work and Miranda can settle down here. We grabbed a taxi for 350.000 RP which is about 35 dollars and headed for Balangan Beach which is located west in the bukit (Peninsula) of Bali near Uluwatu. We found this place through Airbnb called
Brothers Bungalows and had these great little bungalows with outdoor shower and toilet, great little pool, Wi-Fi and beautiful food. We wanted to stay for a few nights but again fully booked so we stayed for two nights. in hindsight this was probably best as even though it was beautiful and very balinese style they did not have hot water for shower and this time a year it can be quite cool outside sometimes.
I would definitely recommend this if you want to escape the busy places and looking for something a bit quiet but not too quiet either. It is close to the beach, Nathan went for early morning surfs while I either stayed back at the resort by the
pool reading my book or went to the cafes at the beach for a coffee and great view of the surfers. Note to all of you, coffee tidak bagus in Bali - no good.
We hired a scooter at this place so we could go and do our own thing. We went to Jimbaran, Kuta and Padang Padang. I have only driven a scooter once in Menorca, Spain. This was not a success as when I came to a full stop I forgot to put my feet on the ground which made me fall to the ground with the scooter and Nathan laughing at me. I decided to practice around Balangan Beach because I want to be able to scoot around everywhere myself and also when Nathan is away. I don't mind the hectic traffic but more so struggle with coping with the scooter. I did a few test drives and starting to get the hang of it so watch out Bali! Vroom vroom!
So here is some advise for you, do not stop for Police! we experienced this once before last time we were here when police waved us down locals warmed us not to stop or
of course you end up paying them money. that time we didn't, both looked away and went as fast as we could!
This time it was busy on the road and they basically pulled us off the road so we had to stop. He asked for international license which we don't have but will arrange this asap. He then wanted to take us to his boss but we managed to bribe him and paid him 200.000 RP/20 dollars, total rip off!! we got away and waved at other tourists to keep driving. Always have 50.000 RP in your pocket together with your license and when you bribe them show them that this is all the money you have. Do not pull out your wallet so accidentally millions fall out.
We are now at
Bangalan Garden for 300.000 RP/30 dollars per night including breakfast. without breakfast 250.000RP/25 dollars. Very good place for this price and would recommend if you go low budget. Just make sure you rent a scooter as it is bit far to the beach and main street.
The food in Bali is amazing everywhere, we have been lucky so far, neither of us has gotten sick
yet. We indulge in all the goodness here. I will attend a cooking class in Sanur when Nath is away so hopefully after these classes I can cook these delicious recipes myself. Hopefully in October I will be able to fit in my dress..
We are also really enjoying all the massages and pedicures. Such a hard life, dealing with this every single day. When you get here we will know the good places to go to so really we are doing this for you. totally selfless.
Today we will leave Balangan Beach and go to Seminyak. Will write another blog on this place as it has a lot more to offer and we will be there for 5 days.
Hope you enjoyed reading this blog and will keep you updated!
