Hello, hello! I'm going to try to set up a travel blog instead of emailing everyone. I will try to keep this to the point and not too long since, as always, the clock is ticking 😊
So, we've been in Indonesia fo for about 12 days now - we started on the island of Bali where we first spent a few days in the surfing Mecca of Kuta. It was chock full of hot Australian surfers and tourists galore. It was a very busy and lit up place with McDonalds, Pizza Hut, etc. While we were there Tory & I spent a day learning to surf which was so fun! I really loved it and hope we'll have the opportunity to go again.
We then took a bus inland to a town called Ubud (famous for the 'love' part in the book "eat, pray, love". I loved Ubud - it was still touristy but less crazy than Kuta by far. It's known for its Balinese display of arts & culture so I was sure to visit lots of museums and galleries. I also rented a bike and biked around the outskirts of town through rice paddy fields to
a Botanical Garden and to a Monkey Forest Sanctuary! Both were incredible - orchids, rainforest, monkeys! I loved it!
After a couple of days, we moved on to a port town of Pandangbai where we ate seafood and stayed overnight so we could catch the ferry over to the island of Lombok the next morning. The ferry ride was slow, slow, slow. We waited 2hrs before even getting on the ferry and then 5.5 hrs slowing plugging away through the swells. When we finally got to Lombok we immediately got on a bus for another couple of hours and headed to the beach town of Sengiggi where we did nothing but eat and crash! The next day, we took a small boat with about 15 other ppl and headed out to the tiny, tiny island of Trawangan. We spent the better part of 4 days on this idyllic island. Seriously - it looks just like what I always pictured 'Paradise'. The stuff screensavers are made of. White sand, clear, turqoise water. The island itself is only 1km wide and took me about an hour today to bike the perimeter. Again, most ppl who head out here to sun worship
all day are young, beautiful and tanned. SO tanned. Tory and I were FOR SURE the whitest people on the island. Everything is slow here - there aren't cars or hoards of CRAZY motorbikes and ppl and time both slide along at a snails pace. The most people accomplish during the day is to get out of bed and move 20 feet to the beach 😊 I've tried to not sunbathe too much and have done some snorkelling and exploring instead. It's amazing but the islands tourists are all concentrated in one tiny area - there are white sand beaches for miles with NO ONE. I spent the better half of today swimming and exploring the beaches without seeing a soul.
Anyway, tomorrow, we head out and fly to the island of Java where we'll spend a few days before flying to Southern Thailand where Tory is anxious to catch the full moon party. So things are going well so far. I've only been sick for three days so far and have yet to be seriously sunburnt! yay! The food and accomodations are dirt cheap so I'm spending about $15 a day to live plus whatever I spend on
activities and transportation. So life is good so far!
I hope all is well in Canada - please keep me updated by email or facebook! Also - a side note - I REALLY urge EVERYONE to read "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson. It is a fabulous book. I couldn't put it down. Please read it! It's about a man trying to establish schools for girls in rural areas of Northern Pakistan and Afganistan. The story is incredible!
Ok take care and much love! x
