These photos were taken the day before Nyepi. At about 15.30 the main road connecting numerous towns and villages on the north of Bali was blocked to give space to the carnival procession. If someone didn’t get home in time, he was stuck on the road until late in the evening =) Each community carried its ogoh-ogoh, a monster made the most ugly possible – to scare off evil spirits. The procession moved along the road, dancing, screaming, beating the drums, shaking and turning the ogoh-ogoh platforms so that they seemed alive. People looked crazy jumping and shouting. It was very hot and they spilled over themselves a lot of water, leaving behind the procession hundreds of plastic glasses and bottles. When I came closer, I found that many platforms were carried by children. And it ... read more

Yesterday was a crazy day on Bali. It was Nyepi – Balinese New Year. The day before was the loud festival with ogoh-ogoh stuff, I’ll write about it in my next post. People blocked the streets and were dancing and making the most noise possible before the Silent day. Actually I had no idea what this “holiday” is really like. I started to get it when in the morning I found a list of rules on our breakfast table. It said: no lighting fires (electric lights must be kept low), no working, no travelling (no traffic on roads at all, everything is closed, even the airport), no TV or radio sounds must be heard, no entertainment or pleasure (!)… Here I thought – what kind of holiday is this?? Sounds more like a sorrow-day. No pleasure... ... read more

2/17/2010 Did I mention the rooster that crows sporadically right outside our window? Well it makes it pretty hard to sleep so around 8 am we finally decided just to get out of bed. We were picked up at 9:30 and whisked away to the lovely Menjargen island for some snorkeling. James had a bit of the "Bali belly" but he soldiered on and though he did hurl once we had a great time snorkling and looking at stuff underwater. I saw an eel (which later I was told is dangerous) and we saw the cutest tubular bright blue star fish. I had a lovely lunch (James was not eating) then we snorkeled again off another side of the island, more fish and underwater plants. We got back to the hotel at about 2:30 and James ... read more

Note: Ya know how I was planning on juicing this blog up with photos? Well, there will be none from Thailand as James walked into the sea with his camera "D'oh" Got a new camera now so back on track- hopefully will be able to upload videos when we get to Sydney. 2/11/2010 Arrived in Bali and a guy from our hotel had a sign with my name on it (I felt like a movie star) - after escaping a "tip" for this dude who placed our bag on a trolley and asked us some questions we were off to Ubud. Bali seems to be hotter than the jungle and let me tell you a ceiling fan does not even begin to cut through this kind of heat. We had a nice hotel with the sound ... read more

Kje zaceti?

Bali Blog 3 - Pemuteran OK - remember one of the hotels we stayed at had its own Elephant, well I can now beat that! The bungalows we stayed at in Reef Seen, Pemuteran Bay had its own turtle, Boomer! Reef Seen look after turtles and have their own hatchery. When the fisherman go out fishing they sometimes find turtles or their eggs, which they can now sell to Reef Seen for a fairly good price. Also if the eggs are found on the beach, they take them and bury them in a pen fuul of sand. As the turtles hatch they dig their way to the surface, and someone puts them in some water , and they are fed on baby silverfish, until they are 3 months old. This is the age when they are ... read more

Menjangan? At first it sounds unfamiliar to me. I was a kind of tourist who mostly spent the weekends at crowded places such as Kuta and Seminyak. Although I have stayed in Bali for two years, I wasn’t really sure about the name. What is it? Where is it? What can I find at the place? Until one of my friends Pingkan who has visited Menjangan Resort previously asked me and my other two friends Meita and Wira to spend a weekend trip at the resort. Well, I thought backpacking is my favorite traveling style. Why not? We choose a weekend in July as a perfect time for the trip. As it was very crowded at southern Bali in summertime, we better search for a place to relax and enjoy the nature voices. We went on ... read more
