The couple I met at The Family Guesthouse in Ubud asked me to accompany them to Kuta, the big tourist town on the west coast of Bali. We arrived on Saturday morning at a bungalow complex just thirty seconds from '66 Beach' in Seminyak. The accommodation was a little grotty, but it was cheap and came with the added bonus of a semi-outside bathroom! It had a tin roof and walls which stopped short of the top, leaving a gap through which you could see trees and flowers whilst sitting upon the toilet. Pretty sweet. Michael has been here many times before and knew some of the locals. These guys manage the sun-loungers and sell drinks during the day, surfing when they want. In the evenings they party. We hung out with them for most of ... read more

There's something about morning flights. Specifically, there's the feeling of anguish as you go to bed the night before wondering if you will doze off and sleep through the buzz of the alarm clock. And having to get up at five sure adds to the tension. All is well though, I check out in good order and after a nervous short wait in the street manage to flag down a taxi. Today's haul is a mere four hours, and it feels good knowing they will be spent in the hands of a respectable airline, even though the added comfort comes at the price of being far from exotic. The wide body is mainly filled with western tourists, and upon landing at Ngurah Rai we are herded into two lots, those qualifying for a Visa on Arrival, ... read more

Next stop Bali. No bombs just peace, tranquility and free luxury accommodation for a week. We finally got to cash in on that timeshare presentation we sat through back in February. We were on Koh Samui at the time, wandering around minding our own business when we were accosted by two overly friendly Thais who wanted to make our day. We were suspicious, naturally, but let them lead us along to see what would happen. They promised free hotels, camcorders and even cash for just a few hours of our time. What happened was we ended up sitting through a presentation that lasted three hours. One in which we dutifully crunched the numbers and tried to make it work but sadly, were unable to. The upside was that because we the guys running the scam thought ... read more

This journal will cover the night of June 17-19. Ah Bali, Paradise as they say. Well our first experience in Bali was getting off the plane onto the runway, not a large tube directly connected to the airport, but onto the runway. Then we were transported from there in a bus to the airport. This is a very small airport, but I believe it was created just to accomodate the flood of tourists into Bali. I also lost my cell phone in this airport because they did not have plastic bins to place your valuables in as they are x-rayed, so I placed my black cell phone on the black conevor belt and never saw it again. Another interesting note: one of the night clubs in Kuta beach was bombed in 2002, with this in mind ... read more

Bali, Calm, Serene, relaxing.....god I think not. Bali is one of the most intense, hectic, party ready places I have ever been too. Minimal sleep, long hot days and sweaty insane nights. But you have to love it. This was a short trip, only 8 days but it was so worth it, Who would have thought that six day befor we left we were all sitting around a table cramming for our finals when Renee said she wanted to ride an elephant, we kept bantering away and the next theing I know im scraping together every last dollar I have and heading to Bali (thank god for cheap student deals). Bali surprised me, the people, despite thier island being ravaged by tourists still love us and are dedicated to thier religion and thier island, they were ... read more

Eastertime in Bali showed me that the bali bombing didn't outwardly seem to affect the happiness of the people here. All cars are constantly checked for bombs however. But extra security is all good with me.... read more

Back in Bandung, Java. After what it seems to be an eternity of Mom knocking on my bedroom door around 4 in the morning, I finally got up and proceeded to wake Beau up at our guest bedroom. In a nearby minaret, Muslim cleric chanting some prayers as a living proof that more than 85% of Indonesia’s population is devoted Islam. This is when I feel to be very spoiled, when you have several full-time maids to do your laundry and to do almost anything you want them to perform, including our long time chauffeur, Pa Enip, who has been serving our family for more than twenty years. He drove us to Bandung’s Husein Sastranegara regional airport to catch our 5 am flight to Bali via Surabaya. Bali is one of few places in the world ... read more

Bali is one of my favourite travel destinations, dear reader. This Australian tourist mecca on the Indonesian archipelago is only a seven hour flight from Sydney, and the first five hours are spent flying over the mighty Australian continent. Friends from home decided to have their wedding ceremony in Bali, and I was privileged to be invited at what turns out to be my second flight to Bali as a wedding guest. I've visited the magical island several times, but this was the first time since the Bali bombings in 2002. On arrival I paid my respects at the memorial to the victims in Kuta, built just across the road from the remains of the two clubs that were totally destroyed in the terrorist attack. I spent some time alone reflecting on the huge loss of ... read more

Well this has probably been my favourite holiday ever! The first day will go down in my personal history as the greatest night out ever! We fly out of Sydney and headed to Melbourne (for some reason our flight went via there??) at 9am I bought the first of what would become MANY rounds. He hopped back on the plane bound for Denpasar. There was many beverages consumed on the course of the 6 hour flight. So many in fact that they even refused Adam a scotch... for a while. After we land we were keen to get in amongst the Bali action. After being dropped off at our hotel, The Barong, Kuta, we headed straight across the road to a restaurant and got 2 large bottles of BINTANG!! (Gotta love that BEER) we had a ... read more
