The cutest kid who was laughing at me and being cute So because I haven't bothered actually typing up my blog entries for the past couple of days I'm going to consolidate them. The only excuse I have for not actually typing them up, is watching Bridget Jones, making brownies, and being lazy...
On Tuesday morning I got an auto on my own, as Cayla was unwell, so we took a different route. Not only did we get pulled over by the police (who do not have a good reputation in India) but they actually turned out to be traffic officers, who were just checking the drivers auto licence I think, and we were allowed to move on pretty quickly, but then we ended up somewhere I was unfamiliar with, and the driver asked me which way to go. From previous Auto experiences, I have learnt to not pretend to know where I am going, so although I worked out that we were just the other side of the flyover from the slum, I said I didn't know, and the driver pulled up and asked for help. They couldn't understand "petrol station" and thought I was saying Metro station! But we established that I had to go over the flyover and under
the other side, and I actually arrived at my slum early!
I am still amazed that my 16 and 17 year old students want to do drawing! They don't take as long as the younger ones, and certainly not as long as the girls, but seem to be keen on doing it anyway! I got all the kids drawing pictures of their weekly activities and colouring in words in nice colours. It's funny how quiet they are when they do this! My class of 10 to 13 year old boys has been chaos every day this week, and 2 new ones joined in today. I think I actually almost screamed when about 5 of them shoved their work in my face and said "finish" about a hundred times. I'm so not a teacher- not in a room that small anyway!
My third class has diminished to two or three girls, but they really enjoy doing wordsearches, and have been keen on having them to take home as well. They don't seem to mind repeating them either!
I am worried that they are getting bored of what we have been learning, about weather and times, and different tenses, and I'm finding
it difficult to make the lessons interesting, especially when all they do is ask me for wordsearches... At least they can actually ask me in English now! I feel a sense of achievement when they say "please can I have a pen" without me prompting them!
Yesterday, Cayla and I had a crazy auto driver who insisted that we take a photo of ourselves on his phone, but when we did they didn't save. We couldn't quite explain this to him though, so i dunno what he thought! It was a bit scary when he was more concerned about his phone than driving, and wasn't actually looking at the road!
After meeting at the office yesterday, we went for a group trip to the garden of five senses (after Freddy demonstrated the five senses to the driver who was taking us there!!) and it was really pretty! We walked through a wooded area and came across some piles of rocks and interesting buildings, then kept walking out towards the main road (after being directed where to go by a random man who was speaking Hindi at us) and discovered the tomb of Akbar Khan, one of the great Moghul Emperors.
The tomb was up some stone steps in a huge building, but when we ascended the steps we could see all over the treetops where we had just walked in one direction, and Qutub Minar and part of New Delhi in the other direction. It was nice and breezy too!
We then eventually got 2 autos back, after some haggling with the drivers!
I even made another batch of brownies last night, which I think have already gone!
This morning I realised that I only have 12 days left! That means only 5 days of teaching as well. I am really gonna miss the kids in my classes, and funnily enough, it's the ones that drive me crazy that I'll probably miss the most! I am also more aware that I have to leave a good impression of my 5 weeks teaching, and do fun things for the week, whilst learning english at the same time!
Sorry to those who have been waiting for blogs, (dad) but I will not be blogging over the weekend, as I am going ON SAFARI! We're gonna ride some elephants and hopefully see some tigers, and I will have some cool photos and a
nice long post about everything we got up to in Corbett National Park this weekend.
So see y'all on Monday!
Ruthie :D
p.s. as you will see in the photos, I was persuaded to get some henna designs. They wanted to do it on my hands but I told them I couldn't, and got it on my feet instead. It looks really cool 😊 It was done by a girl called Bianca who I met on my second day at Zakhira.
