We thought it was a great idea to go to Chamundi Hill on New Year's Day. Well, we were not really the only ones having this idea. To put it shortly, Chamundi Hill was packed with people! We decided to take the foot trail up the hill. 1000-plus steps were awaiting us..... and lots of other pilgrims. Most pilgrims blessed each step with some kumkum (red and yellow powder). Chamundi Hill
We thought it was extra crowded because we visited on a pongal festival day, but it sounds like it is a very popular place all the time. We drove all the way up the hill, but now that I've seen your photos I wish we had walked up at least some of the steps.

Yes, that may be true. We think that most of the times it is really full up there. If you return one day, you should go up the steps. It is not so hard esp. when it is winter time and the heat is moderate. Happy travels!

Such contrasts!
What a contrast between the peaceful little town of Melkote with curious, friendly people and space to breathe and meditate and the famous, crowded scene on Chamundi Hill! So wise you were to get off the beaten path and find a little bit of paradise in too-often crowded India. Marcus looks quite the expert at eating with his hands, and what a smart cow to munch on the offerings. So many sensual and spiritual delights!

India is full of these contrasts. That is why travelling there is so special. Yes, in the meantime we are really experts in eating with the hands ;-), although it was a mess in the beginning.

The air pollution in Mysore is still there. Not as bad as Bangalore, but still bad. But the surrounding villages are wonderful with the air.
