The airport in Leh makes Ladakh an easily accessible place. But the only way to get a sense of how isolated and remote this region is is to travel there overland. It is less than 500km from Manali but the bus journey takes 2 days, stopping overnight in Keylong, presumably because it is unsafe to travel the winding mountain road in the dark. Ladakhi homes are normally grande and lovely. We often slept in the upper window room while staying in the homes. They were very nice places to spend the night.

this plant grows proliferantly in Ladakh, and has recently been discovered to have a multitude of health benifits and is very high in vitamins. The juice is bitter but is palatable heavily sweetened.

We spent the night in a dirty room at this old man's tea tent in Skiu. It was cheaper than a homestay and he cooks up some good rice and dal.
