For the last couple of days I’ve felt really weak and lethargic, apart from a brief walk with Pili I’ve more or less stay in the apartment.
Today I was committed to go and photograph Mike’s (the Pheonix Bar owner) football team play one of the local Goan sides. It was really hot and humid, thank god I wasn’t on the pitch because while watching the guys in Mike’s team I was expecting at any moment for one of them to drop down dead from a heart attack. It did get some pretty good photos for Mike though.
In the evening we were invited to Alan and Evin’s apartment for a meal and social with a few selected friends. These guys are really nice. They used to runs pubs in Wales but gave it all up to settle in Goa, this seems a common practise and the idea appeals to us also.
3rd February 2009 (my 41st birthday!!!!)
I can’t believe I’m forty one years old and would never have guessed I’d be in Goa at this time.
Today on the news we saw that the UK had suffered serious snow storms
across the country and that London was at near stand still. How ironic, Pili has been in the UK for fourteen years and we’ve had nothing but mild winters apart from a day or two at the most with a little snow. The UK’s freezing and we’re struggling with the heat and humidity; at least we have the beach and the Arabian Sea, ha, ha, ha.
I stayed in all day because of some heavy cold like symptoms, I don’t think its an actual cold but rather a reaction to the toxins put in my system from the vicious mosquito attack in the forest last week, I’ve been going down hill ever since, I suppose it’s the price I have to pay. If it doesn’t kill me it will strengthen my immune system.
Pili went to see ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ at the cinema in Panjim with her friend Ruth, she had a great time and the film apparently was superb. I’ll have to see it some other time, maybe on a in flight movie.

After a late night at Bobbies with Ranjeet and his Jersey pals we decided to have a lie in. I’m
feeling a little better and the worse of my illness has gone.
In the afternoon we meet up with John H and Gemma down Calangute at Typsies Beach Shack. We leave to girl’s sun bathing and John and I go for a walk and eventually find a suitable bar and have a few drinks and a good chat. I’ve missed John recently; he’s been spending a lot of time with Gemma which is good for him, he seems to be having a lot of fun.
In the evening we meet up with John and Gemma again at the Pubic Bar where they had arranged to meet some of Gemma’s friends. Everyone seemed really nice and full of the youthful Goan spirit, or maybe that was the vodka. After drinks we all piled into the Punjabi Dabah (or the Punjabi Derby to us). We had a great meal for next to no money and were entertained by the chefs cooking skills. All the Indians eat here, it’s VERY basic but if it’s good enough for the locals it can’t be a bad thing. Afterwards we went next door to Alex’s Bar for a night cap. Their was at least
five power cuts within half an hour, we’re getting used to this by now, this is India after all.

Today we spent all the day on Morjim Beach with John & Gemma. Again John and I spent most of the day walking and talking also topping up our tans. We also found a fisherman’s bar which consisted of nothing more than a few pieces of corrugated iron sheeting and a large cool box filled with ice for the beer.
John and I walked along the sand banks exposed by the receding tide which attracted a large flock of Gulls and Terns. We approached within fifty feet before they took flight resulting in a great photo opportunity.
All in all we had a very relaxing and memorable day, just what I needed.
