SIP Cultural Show!!!

April 14th 2007What a great night! all the SIP students who have been taking lessons in any form of Indian dance, instrument etc performed, as well as any other talents we wanted to show off. I was in tabla, kathak, and bhangra. Bhangra stole the show, no question about that, and it was a dance that we put together ourselves and were really proud of. I hope to upload some videos to youtube if i can...

our teacher did a great job with the makeup--i couldn't believe how elaborate it was. when i checked the mirror afterward i had black eyebrows, heavily lined eyes, and my skin was an entirely different color. looked strange at first, but good from the stage

though i missed every other act because i was getting ready for kathak, i've heard cahalen play his sitar routine and he is awesome. he's also really great on tabla, more than partially due to the fact that he's a jazz percussion major

haha, i was so decked out compared to everyone else. had to be ready to go in my kathak clothes and makeup before tabla.

i barely remember playing--i was so focused on kathak and nervous that i ran through the tabla routine without even thinking about it. went well overall, very few mistakes from any of us.

the SIP Bhangra team!! coincidentally, most of the people in the bhangra performance are the people i'm closest to on this trip, so it made for a fun experience...

Priya you look so professional playing tabla on stage. What a natural. Hope you keep it up when you come back to the states. My work is sending me out to Ohio for a 1 week training soon. Maybe we can get together and run through some tabla basics to keep it fresh in your head. Jugu

Amazing - you really do look like you know what you're doing - the costume is beautiful and weird that you were so worried about the Kathka that you did even think about the tabla. Looks good to me! AD
