7th OCTOBER 2008 - FINAL FULL DAY IN HONG KONG!!
This was our last full day in Hong Kong.....
When I woke up....my feet were hanging off the end of the bed as usual....5th night in a row...3 different beds!! I definitely think the beds are shorter here. I am only 5ft 6ins but I feel like a giant or Snow White when she sleeps on the dwarfs beds! I feel sorry for all the 6ft guys out there who come to Hong Kong and stay in hostels!
We were unsure what to do today as we had already been everywhere that we had wanted to go. We strolled to the harbour to the usual bakery (been 3 times...haha) for breakfast! Bread again.......I am craving fruit so badly...give me a nice crisp apple anyday!
We took breakfast to the top of the harbour viewing platform and ate. I partook in one of my favourite hobbies...people watching!! If it was a sport I would definitely win 1st prize! I spent ages watching 2 different sets of people.....the first a man and woman. The woman must have posed for over 100 photos with the same view behind her whilst shouting at
Nat and I in City Park
Taken by Little Crazy Guy! the man taking the photographs and stamping her foot. I was sure she was trying to get into some sort of modeling agency but if it takes that many photos to get a good one then either buy a new camera or get a new model! The second set of people were 2 girls....they kept gyrating in front of us but even weirder.... they did not have music on and weren't drunk! Highly amusing!!
After a while sat in the harbour we went for a look around the Art Museum and saw some fine art, Chinese writing and some porcelain objects. Weird in HK......you put a cardigan on to go inside the places as they are that well airconned you almost freeze to death!!
After lunch (an ice-cream for me.......heaven in a tub) we caught the bus to the Walled City Park. I tried to set the timer for a photo but a little crazy guy offered to take one for us. He kept positioning us all the while getting further away! I was ready to run...No way was he stealing my camera. Luckily.........for him......he didn't even try! We then wandered around the rest of the park looking
Dragons or Dogs?
Think these were supposed to be dragons but looked more like dogs.....then again if these were dogs not sure I would be standing so close!!! for the giant chess board (not much use as you have to bring your own pieces and they weren't on my list of essentials)!!
After catching the bus, we got back to the harbour at around 7pm. We heard some drumming and it turned out it was Korean day in Hong Kong.....some people were dressed up as Dragons (more like big dogs) and dancing to the beat of the Korean Drum. So so good!! After that there was a stage set up with lots of important looking people cutting some ribbon to start the celebration of Korean Day. They talked about how Koreans were fitting in well in Hong Kong and the nation as a whole was growing and developing. Somehow we managed to get right near the front - in the area marked out in red tape for VIPs and Press!! Haha! There was a bit of a show with singers, dancers (cringe worthy) and the worst magician ever seen.....his best trick was to hold 4 cards in the crease of his hand without dropping them....no seriously!!! Paul Daniels would look amazing in comparison!! Really funny show though not sure that was quite the intention.
After that
The not so magic magician!
He had the best sleaves ever. He kept doing things wrong and then eventually got them right....not sure if it was part of the act! we went back to the amazing hostel, quick change and out for tea. As we looked around for somewhere to eat, we were once again stopped every 2 yards to ask if we wanted a copy watch....I was just saying to Nat that I should just tell them I have a real one when this American guy could be heard shouting with his wrist in the air..."why would I want a copy watch...I have a real one right here" Brilliant!!! We looked for a good Chinese for our last night...you know...'When in Rome' but couldn't find a non-scary looking one so ended up in the Spaghetti house again! Good food though so I didn’t feel guilty for not immersing myself in the culture and cuisine! After food it was off to bed for us…needed to get a good night in as we were flying to Thailand the following day!! So exciting!
8th OCTOBER 2008 - GOODBYE HONG KONG!!
We got up and went for the usual raisin bread breakfast before getting the bus to the airport! The plane was due to fly as 3.30pm Hong Kong time. I was so excited but still didn't feel real. I kept thinking
that I was flying home and couldn’t even imagine rocking up in another country! I had my fingers crossed for some sun sun sun though!!
I had really enjoyed Hong Kong. It was very different to home or anywhere I had even been before and well worth a visit. I was a little disappointed with how unfriendly a lot of the people were though. There had been some exceptions but on the whole very few of my smiles have been returned, people often barged past us without a backward glance and many had been very unhelpful when we tried to ask about things. The language barrier did not help but as far as I was concerned a smile costs nothing. Despite the bad stuff, I still had amazing time and would come back if I had plenty of money to shop until I dropped!!!
