Arriving in Hong Kong found us with mixed feelings. It was a busy cosmopolitian city, full of street traders, ample shops, a cross - section of restaurants and a variety of hotels. We stayed on Nathan Road in Kowloon, what a place! Pleased not to be the ethnic minority for a while, and to find food suited to our European taste buds( one evening I had sausage beans and mash - it tasted so so so good!). It reminded us of London, a hint of home. Double yellow lines, double decker buses, road and shop signs all in English, the difficulties of communication eased for a few days. Being in China for 7 weeks had made up pine for European people. Oh and it rained just like home!

Here is an extract from my diary:
Arriving in Kowloon really dampen my spirits. Nathan Road, where our 'hotel' was situated. A tall dreary highrise building for accommodation', Mirador Mansions on the 13th floor reception area, we hesitantly checked into our room on the 5th floor - strange set up here. The room was so tiny but very clean - that's all that mattered. That evening we ventured out to celebrate our

100th day of travel. Splashing out in an Indian restaurant followed by wine in an Irish Bar competing in the quiz night. Felt better now for being in Hong Kong.

During our short stay in Kowloon, we went by ferry to Hong Kong island, up Victorian Peak - wow what a sight! Breathtaking views across the harbour eventhough a little misty. Ventured up by bus and decended down by tram. Hong Kong island is different to Kowloon, expensive shops, shiny highrise blocks with an air of sophistication.
