Yangtze Cruise China -- Fengdu

Our first stop on our cruise was at Fengdu's City of Ghosts. The Ghost City is a collection of Buddhist and Taoist temples set atop a hill known as Ming Mountain. Fengdu received its reputation when two important officials during the Han Dynasty came to Ming Mountain and later became immortals by carrying out self-cultivation. When their surnames were combined Yin and Wang sound like "King of Hell" in Chinese. Hence people began to call Fengdu "Ghost City". The Chinese version of Hell differs from our western version in that the King is not the evil creature that we cast the Devil to be. Instead he has a whole bureaucracy of underworld officials that the dead have to go through to receive final judgements. The depiction of what punishments await the wicked should be enough to keep one on the straight and narrow.

For those that have yet to visit Fengdu be ready to climb a lot of stairs.
