9th- Almost at Hukou Waterfall - Dia 19
It rained all night. And it was still raining through the morning, when we woke up. We tried to hang our clothes under the shelter but the air was to humid to dry them out. At least the tent was not wet since it was under the shelter all night ?
We where starting to feel the wetness and the rain. Everything seemed to smell bad and I was the only one with a fresh pair of dry socks left. Leonardo is extremely sensitive to smells so Bean and I heard a lot of complaining in his part about the smells. I repeatedly told him it was him not us jajaja.
As we left the confines of our shelter the rain stopped, a good omen for the day ahead ?
Before starting to hitchhiking, which was going to be the day activity. Leonardo really wanted to stop by a public bathroom to wash his shorts. One of the smells he had been complaining as we where packing the tent was the smell of pee in his shorts. He washed them really well, I was the witness...Still a couple of hours later he was
complaining about the smell of pee again jajajaja. The problems as a backpacker ?
Finally finishing all the morning duties we ate a quick, on the road breakfast, consisting of really good sweet bread and where back on road again.
Nothing too excited to talk about, just a lot of hitchhiking.
The last hitchhike we took was a memorable one though... We got picked up by a local driver and a female passanger. He was running his errands so we where part of them. He first dropped the female passanger. Then he picked up one of his friends, from what I understood, to show him the people he had picked up...us. By now we had become friends with him so he invited us for dinner. But first we passed by his house to pick up some apples he wanted to give to us, which we gladly accepted. Surprisingly when we got to his house the whole family was outside watching. After a conversation I did not understand, his little 10 year old sister jumps in the car with us. So the hitchhike ride became a dinner with 2 local men and a 10 year old girl jajajaja. Every day I am amazed by the friendly acts and a acceptance we receive from the chinese communities.
Finishing the dinner late at night we looked for a campingspot near the town of Jixian, just 30km from Hukou Waterfall. Found a place in a local park and luckily, it was not raining. ?
July 10th- Hukou Waterfall - Dia 20
Woken up at 5:30am realizing that the park we had camped became extremely busy during the morning. Too tired to do anything about it, fell back to sleep. Woken up again at 6:00am, finding the outside chatter of people walking by our tent to noisy to sleep again. We finally got out of the tent and realized that indeed there were a lot of people passing by our tent, during their morning stroll through the park. I am amazed by how easy it is to camp in China. If it where America or Western Europe we would have already been fined or at least received a complaint. But Chinese really do not get bothered by a tent in the middle of their park.
Two more hitchhikes and we finally arrived at the waterfalls. It started raining as soon as we got to the waterfalls though. It was an amazing experience to see the consequences of having such a big river being constricted into a little alleyway with a small vertical drop. Water an
The rain kept on falling and we realized as a group that we did not want to camp through another night of rain. We were a bit miserable by this point and everything we owned smelled badly since it never dried properly. And non of us had dry socks left. ? Since it was still early afternoon we made the right decision of paying a bus to take us all the way to the city of Xi'an. A big stop we had planned for the trip in order to rest and and clean our bodies and clothes. ?
4 hours later we where each in an individual bed in a Hostal cleaned and dry. What a good decision we had made jajaja. By enduring through hardships the simplest comforts in life are valued the most.
