Shangri-laShangri-laShangri-la

Old town
We got up at 7:45am. We couldn't find showers last night or this morning so had to skip. Had breakfast at the resturant/kitchen whatever it was (with the friends we met last night). Breakfast was Naxi butter tea/milk with these fresh bun things. I think it was Tibetian style. 10 RMB (less than$2AUD) for 2. Said goodbye to Samicha - the cute pup and waited outside for a bus.

So the bus didnt come but at about 9 this car driving up to Shangri-la stopped and picked us up. It was 25 RMB to Shangri-la/Zhodigan. When we got there we bumped into the American and Dutch girl we had seen staying at halfway house at tiger leaping gorge (who i found out later was Lindsay and Eva). They were on a scooter (which they had hired for about 100RMB) and told us to take bus 3 to the centre of the old town (they were staying at dragon cloud hostel where we had agreed with Jian to stay at in Lijiang). We got a taxi (bargained it to 6RMB) to the old town which was maybe 2/3km away from the bus station. We found the hostel after about 30 minutes

of looking for it (thanks to the well good map in the LP). We got the dorm room for 20RMB then went to grab a bite to eat. The resturants were alot more expensive here than Lijiang and the rest of Yunnan me and Kathy had experienced (mayube in the average price range of 30RMB) so we decided if we could find anything cheaper and more authentic (more for the locals and less for the tourists. We managed to fina a street vendor and had some delicious chicken, pork, beef and yak kebabs. The yak was especially good. Plus we had some bbq corn and roasted potatos. I had about 6 skewers of meat and potatos and corn for about 15RMB (approx $2.30AUD). We met a German guy and a Chinese girl (who spoke german, chinese and english). Kathy spoke to the German guy and we found out he manufatured clothes in China and exported them back to Italy so they would put an Italien label on the clothes. Then the clothes were imported back into China and sold for 10 times the price. Apparently the Chinese hated Chinese brands.

We looked for an hour or so for a

place to find a trek to Meili snow mountain. It was quite expensive though (1790 RMB per day) so we decided to wing it and try and hike the mountain ourselves.
We ventured to the Songzangling Monastry after this (which we were told was only an hour walk from our hostel). After an hour of walking we decided to hail a bus down which was a good idea because the road was really sketchy (especially the last 500 metres before the temple). The temple was incredible and suprisingly for me (but not for her) we met Sophie who I had met in Kunming. Me and Kathy spent about 2 hours at the temple. The toilets were terrible here and I would really recommend to avoid them at all costs (the worst I experienced in China. After nearly missing our bus we got back to the hostel and Kathy booked her plane ticket to Bejiing. I had wisely left my credit card in Lijiang so I could not book my potential plane flight to Guilin. While Kathy was on the computer I met Sander (from The Hague, Netherlands) and Tal (Israel).

Me, Kathy, Sander and Tal went to a smaller

temple and lookout near our guest house. The mountain views were awe inspiring. We got into the dancing in the town square after sunset which alot of the town folk do which I was terrible and out of time for and then had dinner at a nice Chinese place near our hostel.
