Last night in XIAN a few of us went in the evening to the Muslim street market, which roamed for kilometres through streets with run down looking shophouses. Considering the boiling cauldrons, flaming woks and numerous open grills, I'm sure it's been burnt to the ground a few times in its 700 year old history. All variety of food was sold, BBQ meats, raw horse meat, squid skewers, Turkish ice cream, dried fruits, it looked fantastic and the selection I sampled was delicious.



XIAN, at least the centre seems very affluent, many fancy western cars, high end Italian brands, etc. I suppose a small % of a lot of people still amounts to a big number in Aussie terms!



Today's ride was over by 11.30am. Last section was a long slow incline to 900 m, after 82 Kms a little tiring. Riding out of XIAN I don't think I have experienced a more polluted city. The outskirts we road through had large residential buildings up against oil refineries and other heavy polluting industries. Can't help but think about the clear air on the Gold Coast.



Lanzhou is another forgettable town. Restaurants look unappertising.
