I planned my train to Shanghai from Hangzhou probably a little late, I was hoping to arrive in Shanghai around 2pm then have the afternoon there to do things. The train arriving time was ok but then the directions from the train station to the hostel were terrrible eventhough it wasn't so far. There were just so many exits at the train station! In the end I walked 3km too far in the wrong direction, with my backpack in the 30+ degrees heat. I wasn't happy with the directions given!! I eventually made it to the guesthouse around 5pm. And after taking a much wanted and needed shower I was desperate to find something to eat.
After having all my meals given to me for so long or buffet meals I found it difficult to chose somewhere to eat. In the end i settled for rice and vegies and crashed in the guesthouse for the night after.
In the morning I had a few things I desperately had to organise and really didn't want it to take long, but as always these things take much longer than you want and I could finally go and discover what Shanghai had
to offer. I took the train to People's Square and from there I was able to catch the 30rmb tourist bus that shows you the highlights of the city. Shanghai is one of my favorite cities and with a mix of old and new architecture, I stopped along Nanjing road and visited the temple like village. I managed to find somewhere reasonably cheap to eat, the problem in China is you can never read the menu so I pointed to one of the few pictures on the wall. Sometimes I really have no idea what it is I'm eating and sometimes it might be a good idea to know! It was a hot afternoon and the city is really busy which makes it feel even worse. There are some beautiful shops to look around but I was gutted that I couldn't find a good mango shake like in Thailand. After my hop on hop off tour I still needed to find somewhere where I could buy things for teaching and to decorate my classroom so I went in search in one of the many shopping malls.
I wasn't able to find anything but found a possible book shop, but
I would have to wait until the morning to look there. So after dinner my day was over and I got things ready to leave for Yangzhou the following afternoon.
I had wanted to do the route 2 part of my hop on hop off bus ticket but had spent most of the night sick and getting up in the morning to go sightseeing just was never going to happen. I eventually dragged myself out in time to make it to the bookshop before taking the train to the airport to meet the other teachers and deans heading to Yangzhou for the summer camp!
