We have had a very busy week (no change there then!) with the lead up to xmas well in action now. Sophie went to yet another party on Sunday afternoon and made all sorts of lovely arty things, and then each child made gingerbread men. At school this week, we had English Open Mornings for parents to come in and learn more about how we teach English. After a presentation by the English Coordinator, parents came into our classrooms and watched us do an hour long lesson! I was a bit nervous, as you can imagine, but it went really well and I was even able to join the parents into the lesson as we are doing about advertising. One poor mum was picked on by me asking why she had bought her son his trainers....luckily she gave the right answer that she had seen an advert about a sale! After the lesson, the parents went into our new Learning Resource Centre (aka Library!) to see examples of students' work and some of the students doing performances. Sophie had a starring role in the Grade 2 news report from around the world visiting public places. She was really good talking through
the microphone and in a clear voice, and didn't seem nervous at all. She has another starring role this week when she is an elf in the xmas performance on thursday and then she has to do a saying by Confucius (!!) about the virtue of generosity in the xmas assembly on friday! As one of only a handful of blonde children in the whole school, she gets all these starring roles for publicity!
On Friday evening, we went for an impromptu evening out after school, going to the market in search of an elf costume for sophie, then on for a family tea. We bumped into Mr Kevin and Ms Victoria and joined them for tea....altho Sophie and William had chicken and chips in the Big Bamboo family pub, then us adults ate at the Delhi Darbar Indian buffet....85rmb for all you can eat and drink (beer!) - equivalent of about £8.50! It was really yummy and a thoroughly enjoyable way to end the week and wind down for the weekend. Yesterday we met one of Sophie's friends, Finn, and his family, for lunch at a restaurant called Syd-ney! It was a very cool place which was trying
hard to be Australian (surprise!)....and the best bit was the huge sandpit in the middle which meant we adults were able to sit and chat for 4 hours, with bottomless tea and coffee, while the children had a great time getting sand just about everywhere!
Ian and I are feeling a little worse for wear today after a heavy night with school last night. It was one of the teacher's birthday and then it turned into our school xmas party really. We went to a Teppanyaki place which was fab...all you can eat and drink (anything!) for 160rmb....delicious. There were about 25 of us there and it became seriously raucous, especially after Ms Karen and Ms Chu arrived having had a few shandies already....the sake came out and it got a bit messy! After dinner, we went to a bar called 'The Spot'(!) and had a bit of a boogie before Ian, Kevin and I were bundled into a taxi by Victoria and slept most of the way home! It was a great evening and the pics show it....there are some lovely people at school and we have made some great friends.
Today we have taken it ia
bit easy, and the boys had a boys afternoon while Sophie and I went out with Victoria to get our hair cut. Victoria had all her lovely locks chopped off to shoulder level and it looks fab. Sophie had her hair washed and trimmed like the very grown up young lady she is becoming. We had a lovely time, and even managed to fit a quick trip to Starbucks for hot chocolate in too! We are off out again in a minute to meet our friends Suzanne and family for tea at our favourite, Blue Frog, as they are leaving for xmas in a few days. We have another hectic week ahead and are very much looking forward to departing Shanghai on Saturday morning for old blighty! We hope to see some of you while we are home, although we are leaving again on 2nd Jan and our time is jam packed. We will be having a fun-tastic evening out in Boston on Sat 27th.....so anyone who is around is welcome to join us, sure we will be in the Wetherspoons for cheap beer!...we would love to see you.
