Edit Blog Post
We have had one of the busiest and best saturdays since we have been here so we thought we would blog about it now (also, Ian is watching the big match so I am trying to amuse myself and keep quiet as it's not going well!). We had a rather lazy morning and the children amused themselves by playing in William's cupboard, which is not an unusual occurrence, we often find William sitting on the 2nd shelf and Sophie cuddling her baby in there! When we finally emerged from our flat, we made our way to a cafe called Johnny Moo's.....we had been recommended it by a friend at school for a good breakfast. We were not disappointed and we all ate well....I had hash browns, crispy bacon, sausages, fried egg and toast with proper butter and Ian had an amazing burger while the children enjoyed their kids meals. It went so well that we had desserts all round also, before we departed for the infamous City Shop, a few doors along. This is a supermarket which specialises in Western food and is the ultimate in luxury. If there is something you are craving from home, you can usually find it
there, but clearly at a price. However, we go there every so often to buy a few items and today we managed to spy a couple of chocolate advent calendars and the children were in heaven. Christmas is on its way!
We left Hong Mei Lu and headed back to our regular haunt, the Fabric market, where we collected 3 more shirts Ian had had made from his original Paul Smith shirt as the first one had turned out so well. This time in Navy Blue, dark brown and the original Paul Smith material and they look great. I was there trying on a new coat which I had ordered last week, I am told it is a copy Armani but it's just lovely to me and a bargain at less than £40. It has to be adjusted a little so we will collect it next week. We returned home with our wares and had a quick pit stop before heading out to an Indoor Karting place. One of our teacher friends had turned 40 this week and Ian's birthday is next week so a few of us met up to try something different in Shanghai. We met Victoria
and Kevin there and went to a next door park, along with Pinki, another teacher from school, and Sophie and William had a great time on some rides and we joined them for dodgems. After we had worn them out well and truly (or so we thought) we went back to the Karting place and met Jesse, another teacher from school, his wife and also Geoff from the Gubei campus. Everyone was soon ready for Karting, except for Jesse’s wife, and we had a total giggle. Adrenalin was flowing, and even more so, testosterone as the boys whooshed past Victoria and me. We all had a few turns and then realised it was 7pm and the children were hungry!
We moved back to Hong Mei Lu and went to our usual Saturday evening haunt, Blue Frog, for dinner which was lovely and the children had a fab time. All that attention and sweets as well. We have just got home and it is after 10pm, so as you can imagine, they were asleep before their heads hit their pillows and under strict instructions not to be up before 8am...we shall see if they were listening!
One other thing
we need to mention is that school have agreed that Sophie should be moved into Grade 2 now, so she will be joining a new class on Monday. When she took the original assessment at the school, they said they would review her progress and most likely move her to Grade 2, so Sophie has been asking when this might happen. She brought her first report home and it was excellent, full of “Very Good”’s....she is clearly doing well and, we hope, will rise to the challenge ahead. She will be joining class 2A and her new teacher is Ms Chu, who is American, and Ms Wendy, who is Chinese. She is very excited about joining their current topic, which is about Public Places and signs, so we have been snapping away around town today...the Chinese have just been sighing at the unsurprising behaviour from the mad Westerners once more! We will keep you updated with her progress.
