Edit Blog Post
Due to an earthquake in Taiwan or something like that, the internet in China has been rather dead, leaving me with no opportunity to update my blog. Finally the internet seems to work well enough to update it now, although there is still a lot of slowness and pages not loading. In a few weeks it should all be fine again.
Note the title of this post, it means I love Shanghai! The christmas and new years eve week was spent with some time in Shanghai. Christmas day was rather dull and boring and I was glad when it was over. I did however go out for a very, very nice meal with the other teachers from my school.
I took the opportunity to go to Shanghai the day after boxing day to visit my friend Anna from University who was returning to Shanghai for Christmas to visit her parents. It was good seeing you again Anna, and also rather strange seeing someone I know on the other side of the world. There was mass confusion when we tried to meet, it turns out there are too many of the same shops and restaurants on Nanjing Rd and we
were on completely different ends of it. Eventually we did meet up and we strolled along through Nanjing Rd, to People's Square, through some foreign bookstores on Fuzhou Rd where I bought another chinese book that is helping to learn how to read. We also went to the Bund and I think the Bund is where I started to fall in love with Shanghai! Really pretty, huge buildings standing tall on the other side of the river. I've got to make my way to Pudong the next time I go to Shanghai and go to the top of the Pearl Tower.
After that trip I returned to Zhangjiagang, worked a few more days until new years eve and then went back to Shanghai with Aussie Jo.
We arrived at about 6pm ish and it took us sometime to navigate the first subway station and get the correct subway to the station nearest Nanjing Rd, then from there it took us ages to find our hotel. All the time we were doing this we were pushing our way through the biggest crowds of people I have ever seen! Nanjing Rd was packed! After we dumped our stuff at the
hotel and ate pizza at a restaurant we made our way to the Bund, and on the way I seemed to get high from drinking two red bulls. The Bund was also packed full of people, but I managed to get some photos taken of the Shanghai skyline at night and it is very pretty!
After that we made our way to some random place to meet a friend of Jo's. And from there we walked to a big bar strip, Hengshan Rd I think it was called or something like that. We made our way to a really cool bar called Zappatas where I had possibly the best night out ever! It was free entry, but that was compensated for by the ridiculously over priced drinks (20RMB for a small bottle of water!!!) and so many people that you could barely dance. But it was a good atmosphere, there were so many foreigners there, people from Sweeden, Holland, America, Australia, England, many other places including China! It got quite crazy and managed to still be fun despite there being no room to dance almost. Then people got up on the bar and danced, and eventually Jo and I
and his friends all got up on the bar and spent a good hour or so dancing there! There were pretty girls, some of whom weren't wearing many clothes who were also up on the bar and very happy to dance with me :D. And I don't really know how else to describe the evening, we just danced on the bar for ages, shouting out to everyone telling them how much they rocked and how much we loved them! And then I finally got too dehydrated and needed to locate the nearest cash point in order to buy any water. As soon as I left Jo and the other followed and the night was over at about 3am. But it was such a good night and heading back to the hotel by taxi, watching the huge well lit buildings at night time, the masses of people and international influence, I fell in love with Shanghai. Perhaps the next time I go there I will hate it, but right now I am in love with it 😊.
The following morning we met up with the american teachers from Zhangjiagang and had Pizza hut!!! And then I returned back to Zhangjiagang
with some of the Americans whilst Jo and american Jon stayed back there for one more night of madness (which turned out to be quite an anticlimax for them).
On my way back to Zhangjiagang I decided I have had enough of Zhangjiagang. I felt really bad about going back and realised I have got fed up of this city many times in the past and given it many chances, and I've given it enough chances now so it's time to leave. So I have decided at the end of February I will go somewhere else. And what's even better is Aussie Jo is also looking for a job and we have decided to apply to the same schools and we have already been offered 4 jobs! We will decide what we are doing by the end of next week and I shall try and make time to update about that.
For the mean time though, so long as the internet permits I leave you to enjoy the photos I took in Shanghai!
