Alright, so let's start from where we left our hero in Bangkok...
I got up at the crack of dawn to take the stupid bus to Cambodia, Siem Reap to be specific, and it was really empty, just 6 of us on it. Then we got to the boarder and tried to take our passports and money for visas, all of us were sceptical but in the end they convinced us there would be no time at the boarder for us to do it ourselves and we all gave in. Then they let us sit for 20 minutes--I mean TWO AND A HALF HOURS!!! Those effing liars, we totally would have had the time cuz they made us get out of the an and walk through and then the guy who met us on the other side said the road was so bad our bus had broken down and we'd have to wait TWO MORE HOURS!!! I was still pretty relaxed as this point and there were still 4 of us, me, an English guy and a couple from Poland. So they take us to the bus station and there's a taxi waiting for us to drive us to Siem Reap, at no extra charge (this time it was legits, but just wait for the punch line...) so we pile in comfortably,4 people and our driver, then another dude jumps in making the 4 hour ride over the worst potholed bumpy ass road I'd ever experinced in my life just a little but less bearable.
I made it in one piece. Then they dropped us off at a hotel and carried our things up to rooms for us. I wanted to get on a moto and find another place to sleep but it was really cheap to just stay and share a room with the English guy. Then he turned out to be the world's biggest wanker. He went off to have a few drinks in town and before he left he asked me what I was up to, I was reading so I told him I'd probably head to bed soon. So he went out and left the key. Great. So I knew he'd be waking me up to get back in. When he did he was drunk and stumbling around apologizing and asking me questions, to which I gave one word replies so he'd leave me alone to get back to sleep. Then he asks me if I want to smoke a joint with him, um, NO!!! The next morning I look at the table between our two beds and he had used MY book to roll his weed on. Then I got up, packed up my stuff and got the hell out of there.
So onto better things, ish, I say "ish" because I've been sick since I left Bangkok but I did also spend 2 amazing days on the back of a moto seeing Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples. I wish I could gush about them, but really you've got to see them for yourself. Another thing that sucks that would not have bothered me as much if I wasn't sick is that pretty much wherever you go you get hounded to buy things and give people (mostly kids) money. All day all I heard was "lady-ee, lady-ee, you buy cold dri-ink, postcards 10 for a dollar, Canada? capital is Ottawa, you give me money, lady-ee? lady-ee?" try sitting down and relaxing in a temple while some small child is watching you to see if you'll give them money. I feel like a bad person for saying it, I really do, but it's really hard, on one hand it breaks your heart that they have to do it (one kid, when I refused to give her money, said "Í need to go to school!") on the other hand going to Angkor should not be like this.
So today I took a bus from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh and I'm taking a day to rest and get my bearings before I head out into the city. When I got in they were playing Wedding Crashers so I watched that, it was a welcome break from the Cambodian karoake they were playing on the bus the whole 6 hour journey here. I swear they have a really weird sense of humour here, at one point on the video there was a man dressed as a woman tricking a blind man into thinking he was a woman and everyone on the bus was laughing. I was pretty much the only westerner on the bus, apart from a couple from Germany who avoided me. *sigh* I need to get over this cold man!
tomorrow I'll go see the sights and stay for who knows how many days before i go to the beach! a little apprehensive cuz it's the rainy season here but I really wanna relax and sleep and not do any sightseeing for a while.
love
Alexis
