Hello to everyone,
arrived here yesterday which was saturday at about half 11...phnom penh airport was one the smallest airport iv ever been to especially considering id just come from heathrow and kuala lumpur!!
I managed not to sleep the whole 12hour plane jouner from london to malaysia as i had films,tv programmes, music and games at my fingertips (and also i didnt want to risk nodding off and falling onto a little thai lady with her 100year old mum or an oxford lecturer!).How i made it onto my connecting flight im not quite sure! The oxford lecturer left me t go bruch her teeth etc? so i was going solo again in a random airport!haha i ended up on an express train which took me from one terminal to another and found myself at the far end surrounded by numeroius nationalities!there were 3 gates around wher i was waiting and all the flights got changed back to the other side of the airport(ie another train journey) except for mine!!thank god.
there were only about 30 of us going to phnom penh so i had 3 seats to myself.it was a 1 hour 50min journey and as i fell asleep the seatbelt sign came on and it was time to land!wasn not a happy bunny.for such a non busy airport it took ages to through passport control etc at phnom penh!sortin a visa out was a pain in the arse.as i left i saw everyone handing slips to a security guard to get out which i had managed to forget and leave on the passport control desk.a mad dash back with a 19.6kg suitcase at hand with no trolley was in order!i made it out the airport fine sweating like michael jackson in a nursery looking for god only knows hu holding a projects abroad sign.couldnt see him anywhere!!!30seconds later i turn around and see a small friendly looking guy running after me waving a sheet of paper with projects abroad on!i was treated like royalty...he refused to let me carry my bag and opened the car door for me etc.was a well nice guy.he spoke to me most of the way to the appartment and i just smiled and nodded on response to most things he said.the driver only seemed to want to talk about Escalades and the price of jaguars, ferraris, porsche etc in England!after id answered he responded 'i no understand you'.haha
the car journey was unbelievable!!!theres no order or anything.to overtake u approach oncoming traffic beeping ur horn without slowing down and hope they move or that u make it past the car in time.the strange thing is the other car didnt seem bothered by it...he just moved slightly to the right whilst we swerved to the left and then it was happy days!there were cars and motos going the wrong way down roads and it all seemed normal...even the police were doing it.there are no traffic lights so u find urself on a moto stopped half way across a lane waiting for a gap with cars beeping at u to move or die yet everyones smiling!lol...good times!
anyway i got told i was stayin at appartment 2 until the person moved out of appartment 1 on sunday and i could move in there!luckily its the weekend because appartment 2 is miles away from my placement.the accomodation is not what i expected!its reallly simple and the sink toilet and shower are all in the same cubicle.the kitchen is the size of my downstairs toilet at home.its chilled though, everyone im stayin with at the moment is really friendly...and female!haha
havnt bothered unpacking anything as im moving to my actual appartment at some point.im hoping the bed there is confier than the one im in at the moment...when the girls mentioned massages and prostitutes for 5000rield in passing conversation i asked myself why i wud need the former...then i woke up this morning and realised!haha
the weather is like nothing iv had before...must be at least 40degrees centigrade, its roasting!!!!working in this is going to be a challenged...in some ways its a relief getting on the back of a moto as its the best cool down you get!
went for a meal on the first night with 2english girls.i let them do the talking with the tuk tuk drivers!they started at $1 then went to $2 he was asking for $3 so they sed no and went to a different one who then didnt understand where we wanted to go so had to move to another one who we ended up having to pay $3...result!haha...was funny to watch tho.for 3 of us to eat it cost $25.15 wich is about 4pound each i think.everytime my glass got just less than half full it would be topped up again straight away...everyone stares at u but at the same time treats u really well from what iv seen so far. On the way back our tuk tuk broke down so we gave him a dollar then 2 of us hopped on the back of a moto the rest of the way.bed at 9 awake at half 1 until half 5 then sleep then awake again at half 9...worst nights sleep ever!my body clock must hate me, lol.
what elsee....oh yehh they actually eat dog, not chilled in the slightest!and cat!makes me feel sick, haha.on the other hand they had the nicest humous in the restaurant last night so thats a plus!
iv taken about 5pictures as thats all iv really had chance to take so far and i forgot to bring a cable with me to the internet cafe so that also doesnt help...there will be some soon though!

I hope everyone is doing good and il keep u posted on what i'm getting up to.
