Happy Valentines Day!
Lots of news. Firstly, Friday before last went out for dinner had a backadee Bob had a beer, then on to Khmer Family (2 drinks for the price of 1) I shared with Holly and Bob drank two Mojitos. We then moved on to Angkor What? I ordered a bucket of Backadee and sprite and Bob ordered a beer. When the bucket arrived it was whisky so I asked Bob to change it but he decided that it tasted nice and drank it!!!!! A couple of hours later he was very drunk and I had to take him home in tuk tuk. Got home and the very small Cambodian Meas partly carried him up the stairs. After a lot of vomit and sink blocking and falling asleep in the bathroom he went to bed. In the morning I went in there and the sink was full of vomit!! Nightmare. No real hangover!! (Bob adds. Thought I'd learnt my lesson years ago but seems not!!)
The following Sunday we went to Art Attack. On the back of a very small lorry with no seats, about 20 of us driven about 50 kms along dirt tracks sometimes only just wide enough for the lorry without tipping us into very deep ditches
- again a very poor village where we did art with about 200 children split into 4 groups. Our group helped to make klites with ribbons and rope. Had a great day.
Teaching is excellent and we are really enjoying it. I don't know if you remember last year when I met Sophan across the street for coffee. Well she invited us and another guy here called Rob to visit her parents. Had a great day and they gave us a brilliant lunch. Surprised to see two of our photos which she chose last year on the wall together with all their family photos. One was of our house and cars covered in snow and the other was of Lyn with her nephew Lee. Those of you who don't know Lee he is about twice Lyn's size! On our return we went to the pool for the rest of the afternoon. When we got back to the guest house bad news - one of the young Kmher lads (23) called Moeuth had been in a terrible accident on his motorbike. He was left on the side of the road for 2 hours before being taken to hospital. Then transferred to the capital Phomn Penh - bad head injury and still to date unconscious. We have all had a collection and managed between us and previous volunteers $925. It cost $800 just to get the doctors to look at him. His elderly mum is sleeping on the floor by his hospital bed - absolutely dreadful. We all moan about our country but actually we are so bloody lucky.
There is a baby at the school who cries everytime she sees a Barang - white person. Holly and I have great fun when no one is looking just popping up and saying "hello baby". Holly then told me that after she told her mum about this she was in a store and in the ladies when a baby screamed everytime someone used the hand-drier so on her way out she purposely pressed it and left!!!!!
Met some really lovely new volunteers all about our age - not a lot of youngsters apart from Holly - whenever we go out with her they all think she is our daughter and after explaining "no" she just says "yes they are".
The local builders started building a kitchen last Monday at Grace House. By today they had finished the walls, columns and big timber roof structure (joints cut with an axe like they used to do at home before the industrial revolution). Not a lot of foundations and no building regs but they are quick. It'll come as no surprise that Bob is typing this bit!.
Well I remembered to pack my Valentine card and Anniversary (tomorrow's our 25th wedding anniv) card this year! There's plenty of silver for sale locally so I think we'll be shopping tomorrow. Inviting all the volunteers and some of the staff to join us for a celebratory meal at the Paper Tiger (Lyn's fav place) tomorrow.
That's all for now folks (and still no photos!!)
Love Lyn and Bob xx
