angkor wat Ancient Angkor
Second day in Cambodia we mainly devoted to seeing all the temples. The most famous being Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom although we saw quite a few more including Bapuon, the elephant terrace, Leper King Terrace, Phimeankas, Thommanon, and Chao Say Tevoda just to name a few. Many of these temples were built over 900 years ago mainly for deities and kings of the time. The stones were hauled via elephants miles away from where the temples were actually built. We saw many monks dressed in their traditional garb and after inquires learned they make a pilgrimage to the temples. For some reason that we didn't learn, the stairs on all of the temples are extremely steep and narrow, very hard to climb and descend. They have no signs warning you and the hospitals can not be counted on in the area, so you have to be very careful!
It is so hard to believe these buildings have lasted and stayed preserved over the centuries. Every stone has carvings chiseled into it depicting gods, battles, etc. Some of the temples took at least 50 years to complete...The pictures do not do it justice, it is
truly a beautiful atmosphere which can only be understood in person.
Tonight we climbed to the top of Phnom Bakheng to see the sunset. The view was amazing of the differnt temples. After the sunset Steph and I found this restaurant on trip advisor that had great reviews...the only problem was, it was away from town and none of the drivers knew where it was. We finally found a Tuk-Tuk driver to take us out there and wait for us to finish to take us back. It was a little bit sketchy to get there, especially since driving in this town is insane, but it was well worth it. The restaurant was called The Touich Restaurant Bar, Touich meaning small and was named after the wife of the owner. It was a tiny quaint little restaurant that appeared to literally be out of their backyard. Our meal was traditional Cambodian food, very spicy...but nothing that a cold Angkor beer couldn't cool down.
Tomorrow we leave for the rainforest of Thailand so check back in to see our jungle adventure!
