Hi All :) This blog entry shall be back-dated as it is now August the 10th in Malawi. I shall still pretend that this entry comes from days gone by in Zambia! What's there to say? Our Zambian excursion started with a 5 day stay at Victoria Falls/Livingstone, the "tourist adventure capital" of Zambia, "the real Africa." Following this we drove through Lusaka then east through Chipata to Malawi. Much fun was had on the way! The half way point of our overland adventure was in Livingstone where most of the people on our bus either ended their tour or were joined another truck on their trek back south to Johannesburg, South Africa. 4 of the original Cape Tonians are continuing on until the end in Nairobi, Kenya. We have been joined by a handful of ... read more

We have spent more stressful days relaxing on Lake Kariba in Zambia on a houseboat. I decided to actually do something and drag myself to a commercial crocodile farm nearby. I was terrified - 75,000 crocodiles and I get scared at just a few in a zoo. They get skinned aged 3 so most of them were pretty small but they have a lake with 8 metre long adult males that they use for breeding - we drove along the shores of the lake at feeding time and men on the truck behind us threw dead baby crocodiles (skinned but with the head still in tact) on the shores of the lake. Slowly the adult males crept up and then devoured them whole, and the heads crunched so loudly, it was horrible and we felt pretty ... read more

I have come to the realization that my time in Zambia is coming to a close. I was in Kabanze the other day for a livestock meeting and starting making plans to visit another village. I was looking over my remaining time and realized that I would only be visiting one more village, and leaving soon after. A month is a while, but it get taken up pretty quick. Next week I’ll go to Lusaka for the agriculture show, the week after I’ll go to the village, then to livingstone to sort out my visa (always fun) and see the falls, then back here for a week of finalizing. AAAHHHH. So short. For the entire duration of this placement I’ve felt the pressure of time, and now it’s worse than ever. Last week I went to ... read more

Blocked by Bill Back in possession of the Beast in the afternoon (after we had had the good people at Toyota Lilongwe replace anything and everything that looked worn or tired) we decided to make our dash deep into Zambia in an attempt to get to South Luangwa National Park before dark. We knew that this would be ambitious, but we’d already spent a day more than we had wanted in Lilongwe and (despite finding a very agreeable Italian restaurant and some good shops) were desperate to get back to the bush. Frustratingly Bill Clinton conspired against our escape from Lilongwe as we were caught up in a large traffic jam caused by the temporary closure of the main (only) airport/city road so as to better provide his travelcade with smooth transit. Grrr. No doubt all ... read more

If you’ve ever been on a long bus ride in Africa on a nice coach, you’ve probably seen some Nigerian films. These soap opera-ish English-language films are produced by the third largest film industry in the world, Nollywood. Filled with African actors, poor sound, awful lighting, and scandalous plot lines, these films are wildly popular here in Zambia. For the longest time I couldn’t figure out how people could enjoy these films so much. How could you prefer to watch these low budget pictures over slick, expensive, perfectly lit, sharp sounding Hollywood flicks? At first I thought maybe the plot lines resounded better with Africans, or they preferred to watch movies with black casts, or these movies where simply more affordable. With a bit more time I have come to think that it is probably a ... read more

Hi all, Sorry it's been a while, things in Croatia a little antiquated (hence the photos didn't come through properly), then we were travelling and it's taken us until now to catch our breath. Back to Croatia and the Dalmatian coast. We decided to try and cram everything in and so we were once again tired but exhilarated by what we saw in Croatia. We went up to the Village to visit Jo's Dida (grandad) and managed to catch a lift with one of the many Opacak relatives so the trip took 45 minutes instead of double that. Village life was an eye opener to us both, such simple living which is agreeing with Dida because he's 81 and still looking after acres of vegie patches. Saw resident donkeys and befriended a gorgeous puppy we named ... read more

Hey everybody, this has to be very quick and no jokes, I will save the funny stories for when I have longer. Hope you are all OK and enjoying the heat in England. I am having the time of my life meeting wonderful friendly people in the most amazing places in the world. We went on a game drive in Chobe and saw a big herd of Elephants, giraffes, hippo, zebra, antelope, warthogs etc etc all within 1 km of each other. Zimbabwe was great with nice people, that’s where I did the bungee, it was the most terrifying thing I have ever done and will probably never to it again. The whitewater rafting was excellent, I asked the guide for a flip and out of the 8 rafts that day only mine flipped, money talks ... read more

I spent the weekend in Siavonga for an EWB retreat. It was absolutely wonderful, fun, enlightening, and tiring. I got to the bus station in Choma about an hour before the bus came, but still ended up so far back in the line that I didn’t make the first bus and had to wait for the next one to come. Several EWBer’s were on the first bus coming up from Livingstone, so it really sucked that we couldn’t travel on the same one. When I finally got on the second one with another EWBer who is staying in Choma as well and made it north to Monze we found that another couple of people we knew had bought tickets on another bus line and would be on a third bus. So much for a crazy team ... read more

Kids are so damn brilliant. They really do have it all figured out, before society gets everyone all confused. I think your perspective on the world peaks with maximum clarity at the age of seven, and its all downhill from there. Three weeks at the Kondwa Centre did the impossible and uncovered my deeply embedded maternal instinct, one that I was afraid i simply didnt have. The Kondwa Centre is a day centre for orphans and vulnerables aged 4 to 9 in the N'Gombe compound on the outskirts of Lusaka. The children are fed 2 meals per day (meals they otherwise wouldn't get), and are taught at the preschool/ kindergarden level. Its community- based, meaning that funding isn't consistent, but comes in spurts from Zambian and foreign donors alike. The person who keeps it all alive, ... read more

On the way to my second village visit in Chulu, I had the chance to stop by the amazing Masuku coal processing plant. The land was too hilly around the coal mine itself to build a rail line right to it, so this processing station is about 20 km from the mine and is fed by a gondola style 1 tonne bucket system. That’s right, coal is hauled 20 km through the air, hanging from a cable, 1 tonne at a time. Enjoy the pictures!... read more
