In the background was the remains of a Cessna sightseeing flight from Amboseli National Park which crashed in bad weather in November 2007 killing 4 tourists - very sobering.

you can see it for miles in the distance but it feels like ages till you get there. from here it was at least another hour's walk.

This is the end of the busy Marangu Route (commonly known as the 'Coca-Cola Route' due to its high volume of traffic and popularity with backpackers). Check out the path to the summit! We were woken at 11pm for breakfast, and commenced our summit climb at midnight.

Hooray! Made it to Gilman's Point (5681m) after a solid 6 hour uphill trek from Kibo Hut (4700m) through scree, driving sleet and -20C temp

Thoroughly exhausted & exhilirated. It was a 3 hour round trip from Gilman's Point to Uhuru Peak.
