Today was a full day for many of us here in Moshi. After several weeks of planning, today was the Ladies Seminar in Moshi. Our theme was "How Can I Serve?" Tablets and pens were provided for each lady, so that they could take notes. I taught three lessons on the various stages of a woman's life and how we as women can use our abilities to serve others. The men volunteered to prepare lunch, so that none of the ladies would need to be concerned with food preparation. George was a real cut up, since he brought his own knife and cutting board. Of course, there was some good natured teasing between some of the men and women. The men were bragging that they were good cooks, and they proved themselves to be correct. They did a great job, and just as impressive was the fact that the food was ready on time!! This truly was a feat. After lunch, the ladies reassembled and we worked on a group activity. I divided the ladies into groups of 5 or 6, and gave them a large piece of paper, a marker, and an assigned category in which they were to come
with ideas about how women can serve others. After about 45 minutes, we reassembled, and then a representative from each group presented the list. The ladies came up with some great ideas, and since they were able to copy all the information from the lists, they were able to take home a number of ideas to implement relating to helping others. One of the ladies expressed interest in having all of the ideas compiled in a small booklet, and so that's something that I may work on. Many ladies seemed to go away encouraged today, and for that we are thankful.
As soon as the seminar was finished, we headed home, along with Josephat, who has been translating for George when he teaches Charles, a man who works for us. They had a good Bible study with Charles, and we ask you to keep Charles in your prayers, as he learns God's Word.
Jacob has been sick most of this week. He came home from school this weekend still running fever, and seems to have a sinus infection. After George's class, I went along with him to take Josephat home, and then we drove around looking for a
"Duka la Dawa" - basically a pharmacy, to get buy some antibiotics for Jacob. One can buy many medicines without a prescription, which comes in handy, if you know what you need. I was very happy to find exactly what I was looking for. We are very happy that Dr. Danny and Nancy Smeltzer recently moved to Tanzania. They are members of the church who are planning to build a medical clinic in Monduli, which is about 40 minutes beyond Arusha. They've already been helpful to us, in recommending what medicine Jacob should take. Earlier this week I was also sick, running a fever and apparently had a sinus infection, as well. I was initially concerned about having malaria, and so reluctantly went to a nearby clinic to have a blood test. Thankfully it was negative.
On Feb. 11, George and I had a very rare opportunity to get away for a day and a night by ourselves. It's been well over a year since we've had an opportunity for just the two of us to get away. We both were needing a little break, after the month of January, which was very hectic. We went to a place
near Tarangiri National Park, and stayed at a tented camp. We took a walking safari in the late afternoon, with a Massai man guiding us. That was an experience that we'd not had before, and it was very enjoyable. As we were walking, a vehicle came by, and it was a group of guys who were doing some lion research. They told us that a lion was in the area. We also took a night drive, with the same Massai man, but we did not see much wildlife. The following day we drove all through the park, and enjoyed seeing the wildlife and God's beautiful creation. It was a pleasant day, and a much needed short break from our work.
George has had to spend time recently on the necessary, but unpleasant task of taxes. It was a bit more complicated than usual this year, due to moving out the country in 2007, but thanks to George's hard work and Turbotax, he's just about finished.
Our love and appreciation goes to each of you who continually encourage us in our work. We are frequently mindful of the fact that we are able to be here because of you.
