Wow! It’s been a while since I’ve written and so much has happened! We just finished up our last couple of weeks ‘on project’ which meant we were super busy completing various activities. The Batik workshop was a huge success. I have some amazing pieces of work to bring home! We also held a Saturday Play Day for kids living with HIV. The theme was health and nutrition, and I ran a fun market shopping game with the kids. We put in some late nights completing a book of stories collected from the Faraja Home Based Care clients and volunteers. I can’t wait to show the final product to everyone! This initiative is intended to provide Home Based Care with valuable feedback on the impact of their services, as well as to educate people on what ... read more

A couple weekends ago was IDD (sometimes written Iddi), the celebration to mark the end of Ramadhan. Even though we didn’t participate in the Ramadhan fasting, we joined in the celebrations by attending an IDD party at Maggie’s in Dar! Teresa, Maggie and I helped get ready for the celebration by preparing some chickens ‘from scratch’. Well, maybe we did more observing than helping, but I did do a bit of plucking, and Maggie and I received a really interesting anatomy lesson from Abu! Some women Maggie plays basketball with served an amazing meal and we spent the afternoon eating, and playing TZ games, and eating some more. Last week we held a music and health education workshop at the Faraja Youth Centre which was a huge success! Thirty TZ youth ages 18 to 24 came ... read more

Mambo everyone! Yeah!! I was finally able to add some pictures to my blog. Hope you enjoy them! (Piga pica = take a picture) Well, things have picked up here in Morogoro and the time is flying by! We've finally got hard core into our project activities. Yeah!! Here are some highlights from the past couple of weeks . . . -Attending another wedding reception! Liz and I had tons of fun dancing, eating, and watching the traditional festivities. -Watching Liz (who's a vegetarian) react to the presentation of a whole cooked goat at the wedding. Although it was well roasted, it remained in a sitting position on the platter with horns, head and even chin hair still in tact! I thought Liz might faint! -While doing our best to follow along with the Kiswahili wedding ... read more

Morogoro is a large town nestled in the foothills of the Uluguru Mountains about 200 km inland from Dar es Salaam. The view of the mountains as I walk through the town is breathtaking - huts can be seen all the way up the side and clouds often linger on the top. Morogoro relies on Agriculture as its main industry. I've been getting spoiled with fresh vegetables, fresh fruit and traditional Tanzanian dishes at every meal. So delicious! It is very hot, dusty and dry here. Most of the roads are dirt (and are really more like trails than roads), so that adds to the dust. Some desperately needed rains are expected in November and December, although probably not a lot. The Uluguru Mountains are home to one of the 130 ethnic tribes in TZ. They ... read more

It's that time of year again . . . Ramadhan! Well, for Muslims anyway. But I got the chance to participate in this event a bit last weekend . . . Ramadhan happens for one month per year according to the cycle of the moon. During the month Muslims fast with no food or water between 5:00 am and 6:00 pm each day. My understanding is that this is done so that sins will be forgiven. Kind of like Lent for Christians I think. This definitely has an impact on the projects we are planning. For example, if we're planning a soccer tournament for kids within the next month, we have to consider that some of the kids can’t even drink water during the day! On Saturday we watched a basketball game where the Muslim team ... read more
