The final leg of the journey took us over a pass and then through a huge wheat growing area for 140k to Melkbosstrand, a village 20k north of Cape Town.
We arrived mid-morning so had time to drive into Cape Town’s Waterfront and take a boat trip to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 18 of his 27 year imprisonment. It is now a living museum and a World Heritage Site. The visit included a bus ride round the island and a walk through the high security wing guided by a former political prisoner who was himself held there.
