We decided to visit Malplaas near Botrivier in the Overberg for our 8th wedding anniversary in 2008, the name seemed to suit us, Malplaas is pet friendly, so Kylie & parents as well as Honey & parents went to check it out for a weekend.. this is how it went..
We arrived on the farm and went straight to the main house to check in but there was no one around,we waited a few minutes till the landlandy arrived and showed us to the main guest thatched house on top of the hill far away from other guests. It sleeps 6 adults and 2 kids and is very noticeably ORANGE!!!! It was decorated with random orange objects, some scary and others just plain weird.. we were however looking forward to the cosy fireplace
After unpacking and spraying insect killer under every bed and in every corner (rather safe than sorry)we went to check out the pavillion, where you'd hang out in summer as this is where the lovely deep 'splash' pool is, it's painted black on the inside and is built in such a way to resemble a farm dam,it looked inviting but it was in the middle of
winter..we rather made use of the fire place and seating area that has a stunning view over the valley..
We also went on a strole around the area and to check out the Zebras, they were so sweet, and I just love any black and white animal!
We settled down around the warm fireplace in the cosy lounge with creamy hot chocolate and played scrabble till our eyes became so droopy that we didn't care what strange little statues and paintings were staring at us..
The next day Jason and I went for a nice long walk with Kylie through the endangered renosterveld reserve, rolling green hills, awesome views and the typical sounds of nature birds calling and the sounds of things crawling kept us interested as we walked along. Eventually we came to a beautiful hill with nothing and no one around, we stopped and layed on our backs looking up at the blue sky and listening to absolutely nothing as we made shapes out of the clowds in the sky.
Suddenly we heard the softest sound...crunch...crunch and then it became louder and faster, we sat up and looked opver our shoulders to see a HUGE
Eland ( I think?) behind us!! Whaaa! I grabbed Kylie and we ran, but I still managed to take a pic of him walking up to Jason! Then we thought, oh he's friendly...hahaa! silly us! But then...his friends arrived and they weren't friendly at all!! So two Eland and their two Ostrich buddies literary chased us for about 300m back towards the house and we finally passed through a gate where we felt safe enough to stop and catch our breath...and of course take photos of this hillside gang! That was SO scary! you can't reason or bargain your way out of a situation with a wild animal! YIKES!
Got back to the house and just chilled...When we recovered we went down for a swing by the river, that was so much fun, we felt like kids again, swinging over the river and jumping on the trampoline and exploring the little islands on the river..
We had a really good time with good company and our babies had a holiday as well..
