Today we have been mountaineering; this morning we took the cable car up to the top of Table Mountain. From there we walked across to Maclear’s Beacon: this is the highest point at 1088 metres. The views from the top are amazing: you can see the Atlantic on one side and the Indian ocean on the other and all the way down to Cape Point.

Then came the walk down along a footpath called Smuts Track. At first it didn’t seem too bad. We had a guide leaflet that informed us that it was steep, from 1088 metres above sea level to 100 in 4km but we were not prepared for negotiating our way through a waterfall and climbing down ladders down a part that is called Skeleton Gorge! Suddenly the sign at the top which said ‘unsuitable for dogs’ made an awful lot of sense.

We finished off the day in the Botanical Gardens, where Meg was in her element.
We are moving on tomorrow to Hermanus. We plan to go down to Cape Point to see the Baboons and the Penguins at Boulder Beech.

WiFi permitting further update tomorrow
