Dear Family and Friends My trip to Dakar was quite eventful. Overall was not enamored with Dakar. It was big, dusty, dirty, busy, angry city. It was amazing to see hallmarks of western civilization in Africa though. There were high-rises, fancy cars, rich business men, paved streets and side walks etc. However, Dakar, much to my peers disappointment, had not yet truly submitted to western Capitalism, one last vestige of Africa was holding out. No McDonalds. It is amazing how many people from west, when asked what their first meal will be back is McDonalds, or a variant thereof. What drew me to Dakar were two things, a potential job interview and the Ile de Goree. I apologize for my lack of interest in the Ile de Goree, when you spend thousands of hours studying a ... read more

Dear Family and Friends I believe I had an idyllic experience last weekend. It was much needed to get me reoriented readjusted to Senegal. Now, the locals have an oft repeated phrase. When asked how their day has been etc, often the response is “tranquille quoi.” Meaning very relaxed. Adding quoi on at the ends of sentences is a popular indicator of the French-Wolof Senegalese accent. The popularity of quoi is even noticeable in wolof where this bastardized French as found its way into the indigenous vocabulary. Now, when I mean tranquil or relaxed, I do not think that these words do sufficient justice to the new level of cranial inactivity that I achieved over the last weekend. I have been intentionally avoiding touristy things while here; mostly because I was wrestling with my nemesis, the ... read more

Dear Family and Friends Life is starting to settle down into some bizarre rhythm, thus last week nothing of particular happened beside things getting better as opposed to bleaker. I have been working with several different groups, thus my days activities change rather frequently and have little repetition. One day I have painted doors at a centre for talibe, met and interviewed potential host families for volunteers for a local volunteer organization. Others have been spend punching data into excel sheets and calculating stats. Thus things are still influx. Not all has been work, or the search for it. There has been a lot of RnR. Many intermittent days spent reposing by a pool or at a friends place playing drums and sampling smokable products. Thus I will take this opportunity to just attempt to give ... read more

Dear Family and Friends So as you may have noticed from my last couple of blogs I have been on the rocks a little on trying to find my “volunteer” legs here. Things have been rather chaotic. I feel like a rowboat several kilometers off shore heaving up and down in giant rolling swell. When I can see land I have optimism atop of the crest of a wave. Alas that peak of hope quickly falls and land is obscured by a giant angry wall of sea. In this depression I feel isolated and directionless; I am unable to any land markers of reference indicating terra firma in short I have been shitting my pants with fear (not literally, but considering the prevalence of infectious diseases not improbable). I am lost in the trough of broiling ... read more

Dear Family and Friends So for this last week I have been struggling to steer myself to some kind of purposeful voluntary work here in St. Louis. I am slowly recognizing people and making some friends here. I have met a bunch of fellow expats who are working for the Project-Abroad, which is interesting topic in itself. This may become a tangent that I will expand upon later when I have time, or rather I have run out of fun news bits to tell and feeling like filling cyberspace with my ramblings. During this last week or soI have had a rollercoaster of emotions. I have gone from moments of contentment to sheer panic as I attempt to throttle the frothing manic desire to call my airlines and rebook the next flight to bring me back ... read more

Dear Family and Friends I have survived my first 3 to 4 days in Africa and began that oft talked about term called “culture shock.” I have experienced it a couple of times and I am familiar with several of its variation; I always find it exceptionally difficult to specifically analyze the impact it is having on my behavior. With that aside I can pinpoint one phenomenon that I have run across that is something which has been referred to as "African time." The phrase itself does not have much currency here, specifically in St. Louis; however, the phenomenon is quite obvious. I suppose that every hyperactive, energetic, constantly working, Western, adrenaline junkie like me is baffled and boondoggled by this immense sand trap that is “African time.” Getting up at 7 am with an itching ... read more

Dear Friends and Family I am alive and well (at least still kicking) in St. Louis, Senegal. So let us start this adventure from the humble beginnings: my tearful mother bid me goodbye at the Toronto International Airport. From there I smoothly navigated US customs and got to New York for my lay over. While at the JFK airport I thought it would be fitting to have one last proper North American meal before I set off Africa, in part to appease my mother who was concerned that I would starve in Africa there and also I really was quite peckish. After much deliberation and exploration of the international wing that I was confined to I came to the conclusion that Burger King was the establishment that best epitomized American cuisine. I might add that the ... read more

It is probably not hot enough to fry an egg on the pavement. Probably. Some nights the bed feels like it has an electric blanket on it. The fan moves hot air around and certainly feels better than when it is not on (when electricity is cut—at unpredictable times but several hours most days). In April mornings were pleasant until 10 or 11. In May the night cool was gone by 9AM. In the litany of greetings that are de rigeur, each person asks how about the heat; are you OK with this. Very few places have A/C, and some not much cooler than outside. The word is that it will be better with rain, but stories of flooding, the thought of muddy sand (which covers all areas as sidewalks), do not make the change appealing. ... read more

Well the camera hasn’t come back to life, although I hope it’s only the batteries. I met a Dutch family and we went on a pirogue trip to see the birds. The husband has a sweet camera, so he took better pics than I could anyway. Off to Dakar tomorrow morning if I get up on time! Other than that I did little today but eat mangoes (four) and read. Have you ever heard Dutch kids talking? You’d swear they’re making that s**t up! ... read more

I had my worst mishap of the trip thus far. I went on an ill-fated kayak trip and stupidly did not think to leave important things on dry land, including my camera, money, and passport! Lost my bug-spray and a bottle of “home-made” spring water. Right now I’m letting the camera dry but I fear that because it was salt water it may be toast! Hopefully, at the very least the memory card will still work. Also the Senegal stamp in my passport washed off and two Myfloquin tablets were destroyed. I should be OK on both counts, however, as I have extra Myfloquin and I didn’t need a visa for Senegal anyway. As far as sinking a Kayak in a African river (Senegal river) goes, this was not too bad an outcome --- no crock/hippo ... read more
