reaching you from ruhengeri, rwanda. hello peoples. rwanda is beautiful. and the people are freindly. a little too much so at times, but its all good. since arriving in the capital kigali the 19th, we have been to ruhengeri, then gisenyi, kibuye, kigali again, and now ruhengeri again. i knwo it seems like a circle all done through buses...but its been picturesque hills, lovely lake kivu, sunsets, sunrises, lightning, fog and many smiling children the whole way. basically rwandan banks hate our cards, but eventually we got to kigali on a weekday and got money from our credit cards. all in order to pay for our adventure tomorrow...mountain gorilla trekking! this means that we will be hiking up the side of a mountain for up to 4hrs, looking for the rare mountain gorillas. then we spend ... read more

So I have finally taken it upon myself to travel solo in the great city of Kigali. To get to the city, I first have to walk down a narrow dirt path down the mountain on which I live. It is a fun walk, with a nice view, good exercise, and very out of the way, so one of the few places that I can go and see no one for 10-15 minutes. However, since it is out of the way, it isn't always easy to figure your way. On the way down its easy, since all dirt paths lead to Kigali, but on the way back it forks and branches off many times, and you have to know which way to go. The first time I went down, I was with a friend, but ... read more

Africa is, truly, very very different from Canada. The people! The views! And (as mentioned before) the Kamikaze drivers! This past Sunday I traveled to several small villages in the east of Rwanda (roughly a 2 hour walk from the Tanzanian border) with some friends, and visited the people there. It was amazing! All of the people that I met were very kind and friendly, despite the fact that they didn't speak English or French, so all conversations were through a translator. The views, magnificent! In the last village that we went to there were kids EVERYWHERE! When we arrived about 60 kids started chasing our car, and kept up since we were going slowly (terrible roads). And then when I got out they swarmed me and I ended up shaking all 120 hands proffered, ... read more

Dear adoring public, The very first thing that one notices when one gets picked up from the airport in beautiful, beautiful Rwanda is just how crazy all the drivers here are. Insane, crazy, suicidal maniacs, the lot of 'em. In the car and off you go! Flying down potholed roads at 60 km/h, passing mere inches (no exaggeration) from pedestrians, stopped vehicles and moving vehicles, dodging around lorries five times bigger than your car, frequently driving on the wrong side of the road for extended periods of time to get around obstacles, honking like the maniacs they are to get people out of their way. Oh yeah, and about half the vehicles here are of British design (ie. driver on the Right side), and the roads are North American (ie. cars on the Right side ... read more

Hello again, loyal fans! So I have arrived in Rwanda now (well, I got here a few days ago, but I just got into the city to find an internet cafe). I will briefly describe my journeys. My flight to London was uneventful. BORING!!! I met up with Aunt Nicky, Uncle Stephen and Aveleigh in London, and they showed me around a bit (as much as they could in the brief time that I was there), then it was back to the airport for my flight to Nairobi. This is where things get interesting. We sat on the tarmac for two hours (!!!!!!!) while they fixed some stuff in the hold (a guide for the luggage containers broke), and finally got on our way. To add to the fun, the entertainment system failed, so we ... read more

Hey everyone! Welcome to the blog of Kevin B. I am super psyched to be leaving for a Rwandan adventure this Saturday! I have been preparing for this trip for some time now, but its only been in the last month that things have really started to come together. Here's the history: I was first introduced to the idea of travel to Rwanda in early 2005 by my friend Lua, who lived there for about 10 years with her family, starting in 1994 I believe. She showed me a video about an organization called Orien Aid that takes a group of youth to Rwanda every summer to do various volunteer work and activities. I was interested, but since I had no money, I couldnt go. My brother Daniel went that summer however, which of course ... read more

Hello everyone! I'm currently back in good old faithfull Jinja for a couple of days of mid-placement training so thought I'd best grab the oppurtunity to tell you all about my travels over the last 2 weeks. I've been exploring the SW of Uganda and Rwanda with 4 of the volunteers. The holiday officially started on Saturday the 24th March with a crazy night of dancing in Jinja untill 6am with Cat to celebrate having made it to the half way point! I've found the cure for hangovers - just don't go to bed! Then essentially you need a massive Ugandan breakfast of lots of chipaties, pineapple and eggs! On Sunday we headed to Kampala - my first trip to the capital. Can't say that I liked it all that much. It's just a big, bustling, ... read more

Interesting country Rwanda. If you didn't know what had happened here in very recent history you would think that it was the most developed and contented country in East Africa. The roads don't have a single pothole, there are roundabouts full of flowers, modern glass buildings beside broad, tree lined avenues, and everyone is smiling. For those of you that don't remember here is a very short account of what happened in Rwanda: Rwanda has two main tribal groups, Hutu and Tutsi. The two groups had coexisted and intermarried for centuries. They shared a language, a religion and were pretty much indistinguishable. This all changed when Rwanda became a Belgian colony after being taking from the Germans during World War One. The Belgians issued identity cards to distinguish the two tribes, and used the Tutsi minority ... read more

Okay so we're back at the same campsite in Kampala, Uganda as last week (ie. no USB hookup = no pictures) but I'm labelling this post as The Gorilla Post. As soon as I get to a better computer, i will update this post with more mountain gorilla pictures than you can handle! So, in a nutshell: it was a stunning experience. Literally! I think i spent the whole time wide-eyed and mouth gaping open :o) We got so close to them! When i imagined this whole "sit with the gorillas thing" i imagined us hiding behind some trees, looking at them eating about 200 metres away, but no! At times we got close enough to touch, but we couldnt of course because they can easily catch human diseases. They were so nonchalant (Scott: thats the ... read more
