Swakopmund to Spitzkoppe

October 9th 2006 A delayed departure as the truck had still not been repaired in time, so we headed out into Swakopmund to do some extra shopping. We left at 11:30am stopping at the incredibly foul swelling seal colony. The beach is littered with dead seals and their skeletons with the occasional scavenging jackal. The actual seal numbers are quite low at this time of year. A few seals bobbed around in the rough seas and a few rested on the shore. We then set off on largely smooth and tarmacced road through flat desert landscapes. Suddenly the huge granite masses of the Sptizkoppe mountains loom out of the desert. They are stunningly beautiful. We encamped in the wilderness right beside one of the outcrops. Before tea and nightfall Jen, Stephanie, Jenny Nagel and myself went scrambling on the rocks. Jenny Nagel and myself climbed right to the top. She is fearless. The views were spectacular as the sun set. It was my favourite camping location so far.
