Dear All, A very warm greeting from the Angolan border, where we are having a day of washing and blogging before turning south. A nearby forest fire in Botswana has burnt itself out, and I have trained an Arrow-marked Babbler, Turdoides jardineli, to eat crumbs from my hat. We hope this finds you all well, it is hard to imagine a British November currently. We met a German tourist yesterday who almost fell off his chair laughing as he told us how he mistook the morning grunting and snorting of the hippos in the Okavango river, for the noises his wife makes in the bathroom. As I sit here typing, Jo is doing her morning routine and there are similarities! I think it is mainly the hippos..... We last blogged from Sierra Leone, after we finished ... read more

This feels odd. Its almost two years since my last entry on our Charlie Boorman trip. I'll talk about why on another thread, but for now I'll just take care of some unfinished business, namely that of concluding the story. First off, an apology. I have no further biking photos after day 13. Can't remember why, but the final day's crossing into Zambia after a short run from the lodge was pretty uneventful. The name of the hotel at Victoria also now escapes me, but it had many animals wandering in its gardens; this added to our general sense of well being and accomplishment at making it all this way without mishap. We had a long and pretty filling dinner and many lifelong friendships were declared and commitments to reunions given. The next day Pam and ... read more

A lot of sorry looking faces this morning. Jenna had goaded the boys into a bit of a session. Her bar bill had twenty-five shots of Jaegermeister, twenty-five of Jack Daniels and assorted other goodies - I doubt she bought every drink that night too. We had intended to fill up at the gas station just before the lodge as we arrived the previous day, but they had no fuel. "Maybe tomorrow" was all we could determine. Well, tomorrow has come and there is still no fuel. Luckily, the lodge has experienced this many times before and has a reserve supply on hand, sufficient for the six bikes that need it. Apparently they intend to build their own storage tank and pump to cover these eventualities in the future. We ride the entire route on tarmac ... read more

We leave N'Kwazi at nine again, and pop back to the gas station at Rundu for another hit on the ATM. We then have a choice of doing two hundred kilometres off-road following the line of the river to our next stop or a very straight tarmac road which runs in parallel. We start off on the tarmac, to make up some ground on the others who went off earlier. As we ride along the straight road, my mind wanders back to the previous evening, when we were "treated" to a dancing display by some local people, and pretty dire it was too. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of this kind of stuff generally - we attended a wedding in the Tala Game reserve near Durban SA earlier in the year, and ... read more

Today's trip Its a pretty straight road to Rundu, first half gravel then tarmac. We'd been given the warning that we had to conserve fuel carefully or we would not make it t the next gas station. As usual, I took in approximately half of the briefing information (the half about conserving fuel) and forgot the rest. And so as we progressed along the route, I used the BMW's trip computer to monitor our range. Even two up and heavy, the range was more than enough to get us to the end of the route we were on. I therefore applied some throttle and took full enjoyment from riding the dirt track. As we neared the end of the stage, I noted triumphantly that I had over 50Km range left. A couple of other bikes were ... read more
