13 april bazaruto archipelago family outing ( maputo islands ) The Bazaruto Archipelago is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Set just off the coastline of Mozambique, the weather along the coast remained sunny throughout the day, benguerra bay resort islands had excellent accommodation, they had small and intimate rooms were we slept for the weekend, they offered genuine hospitality, personalised service and an intimate knowledge of the natural environment. It had a rich East African/Arabic feel – evinced in both the décor, and the unique and delectable food. We were spoilt for choice with the luxurious options on the menu. Friday (6/8/10) Drive Day Another early start we were back on the truck this time bound for Mozambique! We stopped midmorning at a local stone curio’s picking up a couple souvenirs. Back to the truck we cruised along some the very narrow single lane road’s. Keen to get to camp we planned a quick lunch stop, which took over 45 minutes to buy a couple bottles of water (TIA). A couple hours later pulled into our roadside camp spot for the night, in time to whip up some spag bol for dinner. Saturday Up and at em, we hit the road right on 7am along surprisingly good roads. We stopped to buy some fresh cashews and made another quick road side with lunch everyone keen to get to Vilankolos. We arrived at Vilunkalos a small African ... read more

Weather spoiled my Mozambique experience. The idea was to visit all these various beaches along the Indian Ocean but when cloud blocked out the sun for most of my stay I decided to just stick to Viliankulo and Tofo. Both known for its diving. Viliankulo is close to the Bazaruto island which is the more ideal place to stay but since its about $300 a night I stayed in Zombie Cucumber in Viliankulo which despite having mattresses on the floor it was the best hostel and sleep that I have had in a while. There are many islands to choose from but Bazaruto is the best one where diving or snorkelling is combined as a tour. Diving costs an expensive 100-euro to get 2 dives with some poor quality equipment. Easily the worst so far in ... read more

Unfortunately whale shark season finished several months back, and my interest in diving near Vilankulos wanes as soon as I hear that news. However S and I investigate an overnight dhow "safari" leaving the following day - it offers a night of camping on one of the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago, plus snorkelling and walking, with transport being in a traditional dhow (with the main propulsion provided by a non-traditional outboard). It's expensive (not appreciably less than my land-based safaris in Kenya and Tanzania) but holds the promise of seeing interesting sealife including whales and dugongs. Our other companions are four thirty-something San Franciscans on a world tour after having been made redundant. They're inclusive in that admirable American way, and seem to be reliving some of their college days going by the cooler of ... read more

To say we set sail early in the morning is not entirely true as there was not a breath of wind to speak of, so it was under the power of the small outboard motor that our dhow left Vilankulo and the African mainland, bound for the tiny island of Margaruque, our first stop in the Bazaruto Archipelago. As it was low tide Capitano Mattais took the extra time and caution needed to safely navigate through the rock reefs, sand banks and fish farms, and once successfully in open water afforded himself some laughs at the other capitanos who had run aground and were now helplessly waiting for the tide to rise. Among the stranded were two capitanos who had been unsuccessful in acquiring our business the day before. It was an unblemished sky under which ... read more
