Fishing port
A view of the rampart After running on only few hours of sleep for forty some odd hours, straight caffine, rapidly swelling feet, a plane with a broken wing (only a slight exaggeration), and three hours worth of driving, we have arrived safely here in Essaouira. The stop in Casablanca had us slightly worried as they kicked us off of the plane and didn't give us any instructions on where to go... too bad we can't read Arabic! I think mom was stetched beyond her comfort zone getting into a plane with not one English word to be seen. What little french we know seems to be coming in handy, it turns out that we can understand a great deal more than we thought.
All of the trouble getting here was worth it, even though we arrived at night, it still took our breath away.
The buildings are so full of character with splashes of bright colors.
Aziz (our guide) is introducing us to some of his friends, and we are getting a more personal introduction to the people than on a more generic tour. We spent the afternoon in the back room of a store keeper's (Idriss, another friend of Aziz's) drinking tea
secret store
Idriss showing us his "secret treasures" and looking at his vast collection of jewelry from different parts of Morocco and other regions of Africa.
We have managed to buy several beautiful rings in the Medina today. We are excited about the things that we will get to see as today was a great introduction into Moroccan culture. Tonight Aziz's friend Seemo is playing gnoawa music at a restaurant and we are going to watch him.
We have to keep it short today, but we promise to write as soon as possible.
